Cant get into darvels team. I wouldnt have him in my team

I wouldn't say he's struggling to get into the team, it's only two games into the new season and he played the majority of games last season. A bit early imo to be saying he can't get into the team this season.

Lots of really good points being made.

I guess, but, maybe there's more of a future for playing in the afternoons in the amateurs where playing is also for the local community or based on a local youth set-up. If it's just a social game then, if it frees up the afternoons, maybe Saturday mornings is the way to go? This would be especially so in Glasgow.

How are the Sunday leagues getting on? Have they also been affected?

    As Crazy Feet says:

"I suspect we will start to see a lot of the decent amateur teams, especially the ones with their own park etc look to take the plunge into the WOSFL soon. "

This could really radically change the face of amateur football. Imagine the WoS with some sort of "Intermediate" Divisions at the head of the main current Amateur Leagues in the west e.g. Ayrshire, Caledonian, etc etc. A bit like the current Division Four but without the commitment to get a WoS standard ground straight away.

Years ago, you could only get into The Caledonian League if you had your own ground. They wouldn't let you in if you had a council pitch. Teams like Glasgow Harp, Giffnock North, Milngavie Wanderers, Doune Castle and EKYM all have a lot of the infastructure already in place to move into the WOSFL. St Mungo have a lease at Loretto as well, which could meet the requirements with a little bit of development.

Drumchapel Ams in the Central have the right set up as well.

You would have to think teams like this will be considering taking the plunge. I actually heard Drum Ams are joining next season (they already have an U20s in the WOSFL set up for this season) and EKYM thought about moving this season but backed out.

Hats off to you, mate. That’s incredibly informative.

Saturday morning in West Central Scotland thriving too. 70 odd teams in the old Strathclyde league, albeit a good portion of them came from the Glasgow District league. Why does Saturday morning seem to be doing OK and Saturday afternoon is in turmoil?

The convenience of getting your game out the way in the morning plays a massive part in it. It still allows people the chance to play football in the morning, then go and do as they please in the afternoon whether that's family stuff, Ibrox/Parkhead or a game of golf etc. Saturday afternoon, you are away from lunchtime and not back until the evening depending on where you are playing, it's a big commitment. Social attitudes have changed from 20 years ago when the afternoon leagues were thriving and the morning leagues were seen as a joke.

You also need to factor in the WOSFL and the fact a lot of amateur teams are stepping up into this and teams in the bottom divisions are raiding the amateur ranks for players.

The amateur afternoon leagues are on their last legs. I suspect we will start to see a lot of the decent amateur teams, especially the ones with their own park etc look to take the plunge into the WOSFL soon. The Saturday afternoon ship is sinking.

Agree there needs to be a reform. But sadly I don’t think it will ever happen or if it does it’ll be too late. Hearing a few teams with good set ups but not necessarily “top” teams thinking of joining the WOSL. Has there been any Edinburgh teams make the move?

What teams have you heard are moving over?

  6. The Saturday afternoon amateur game is finished without serious reform - leagues joining together, maybe regionalising them etc and possibly things like being more flexible with kick off days and times.

The West of Scotland League has been the final nail in the coffin.

The morning leagues are thriving if the Caley/Central/SAFL don't adapt or do something quickly they will be gubbed.

Big loss to the amateur game in my opinion. Community club been on the go for a number of years who were starting to find there feet in the prem.

They are taking a year out and rejoining the Caley 1st Division next year. They have obviously been left with no players and not enough time to get the team up and running for the new season.

  8. Thorn Athletic confirmed as being accepted into the WOSFL. Not sure what the implications are (if any) for the Caley League here as the last I heard, Thorn didn't have an amateur team sorted for next season yet (current Caley team stepping up to WOSFL).

Wasn't Huntershill considered good enough for lower levels of the West Region? It was only once Rossvale were in the Premier that more serious issues were raised.

We've just seen Bonnyton Thistle get an SFA Licence. It's actually going to be easier for a club like West Park United with all their age and women's teams to fundraise a suitable facility. http://westparkunited.co.uk/

Huntershill is a council owned facility is it not?

I did mention already they are very well run at youth level etc with plenty of teams, a bit like Drumchapel United I guess but we've seen all the issues Drumchapel have encountered already in the WOSFL with many teams complaining about the Donald Dewar Centre not being fit for purpose.

    That's a boys club ffs.

They have nowhere to play permanent.

    No fans.

    No history of men's football.

Like a good dozen of clubs involved this imo is all so laughable but crack on 🤣

They are a well run club and certainly established in youth and amateur football but I see where you are coming from also. Teams need to understand their level.

Where's the funding coming from to build a suitable ground to meet the semi professional requirements?

I agree and it's why i've asked about in other threads. It's been over two weeks since the Lowland Playoff. Everyone in the Premier-First-Second have known what division they will be in and have been able to plan accordingly. Everyone below and applying have been disadvantaged.

Definitely. What league these new clubs will be playing in is going to impact on their recruitment of players and the longer it goes on, they could end up missing out on players etc due to the uncertainty.
