I think it was about 8am yesterday, been going up for years and this is the first time I've had a perfect run, including going over at 1am in the past.

Still surprises me. I don't go as far as that, that often, the missus was from up near there though, I remember only a matter of 7 or 8 years ago you could drive up to the west highlands late afternoon on a Friday and it be relatively quiet, it's fucking mental now, the amount of tourists is wild and their driving is similar. Skye in recent years is hell, I don't even go there anymore unless it's off season.

Our Scottish cup draws since Culter in 2011 have been an absolute shitshow in terms of good away days.

Full list in spoilers at end of post but filtered out the away games. * denotes team in same league as us at the time

    Rangers (A)
Dundee Utd (A) (covid season, no fans allowed)
    East Fife (A)
    Celtic (A)*
    QoS (A)
    Aberdeen (A)*
    St Johnstone (A)*
    Dundee Utd (A)*
    St Mirren (A)
    Culter (A)

So many draws against teams in our own division. Maybe only QoS away the best day out and that was partly because we’d gone 5 or 6 years without a trip to Palmerston at that point?

This is just a stream of concsiousness off the top of my head so might make little sense but there's a load of beaches on some of the lakes in and around Berlin (such as at Muggelsee) or outdoor pools like Sommerbad Neukoln or Kreuzberg which have child friendly areas, pools and some slides. On a similar theme but bigger Tropical Island which is an indoor waterpark in an old aeroplane hangar outside Berlin is a short train ride away, you can go for the day or book a room and go for 2 days https://www.tropical-islands.de/en

Tiergarten is absolutely massive and has a load of playgrounds and I'm sure it will be the same for the parks near where you're staying plus there's a Nature park in an old converted railway yard with some old trains and the tracks all left there (https://www.visitberlin.de/en/natur-park-schoneberger-sudgelande). They might also enjoy one of the boat cruises down the Spree, most of them provide shade or umbrellas if it's blazing sunshine too.

The fanzone when I was there for the 2018 World Cup had a ferris wheel, a few other rides, your standard funfair type food and some horrendous German europop on the big stage, it's also free so easy to come and go as you please. Imagine there might be more to it this year with them hosting.

DDR Museum is free for kids under 6 and has a ton of interactive stuff about what it was like for kids in East Berlin so could be worth a try and you've only paid for your own tickets if the 4 year old hates it. There's a Legoland centre in Berlin but no idea if it's any good and there's also a Natural History museum. There's also an interactive kids museum but it says from ages 3 and up, might be alright for the eldest https://www.visitberlin.de/en/labyrinth-childrens-museum-berlin

There's a load of other places easily accessible on the trains. Big cities like Hamburg, Dresden and Leipzig within a couple of hours, regional trains of an hour to nature reserves like Spreewald or if you really wanted within a couple of hours of the baltic sea and the seaside resorts or even some of the Polish cities just over the border.

As German Jag mentioned Visit Berlin is a decent guide and also breaks it down to different age ranges which might helpt https://www.visitberlin.de/en/attractions-children

If you're wanting to go for the Euros with young children I don't think you're going to get much better than Berlin unless you find some kind of resort somewhere for families which I'm afraid I'm not much help with. Hope some of that helps.

You sir are a gent, thank you for that. Probably settles it if we end up staying in Berlin, that's more than enough stuff to do in a week I think. I genuinely think the older one would love doing most of this stuff. I don't massively fancy the idea of a resort type thing, most of them look quite average and it's not a real experience of the country, could just as well be anywhere.

Coming back from a weekend away, drive started great, perfect run on the bealach na ba meeting no cars and even better no arseholes in campers, the roads to Inverness pretty decent and then the absolute horror that is the A9 obviously stuck behind some fud doing 40 with numerous cars refusing to overtake. Eventually make it to the Queensferry crossing, well the horrific traffic leading to the crossing that then mystically disappears when you reach the Edinburgh side. Thank f**k I'm still of work for the next few days as I'm done with driving.

Hens teeth getting over the Bealach meeting no one these days. The last time I drove it, a camper got stuck for ages and I just turned back, haven't done it since.

Glasgow has loads of great pubs, but only one of them is close to the city centre: The Laurieston. The Doublet is nowhere near the city centre. 😅

    Laurieston

    Old Toll

    Three Judges

The Doublet and Laurieston being in the list is why I said city centre-ish instead of city centre 😉

Most Accies fans have took to drinking in The Bayhorse just down from Hamilton racecourse. Decent pub and ran by an Accies fan

The Tap Room used to be a decent pre-match pub in Hamilton, but it's now the Ivy or something? Which I've been in once and seemed to be run by a couple of miserable smelly people who are trying hard not to make it a football pub and were furious any time someone dared show a bit of Thistle or Accies colours. I take most Accies fans don't bother with the place? Need a new alternative for next season by the looks of it.

Because of your age you were given diluting juice in the Alamo!

Once you moved onto adult orange juice you were obviously out your depth.  😂

    🤣

Don't even like vodka n orange juice so that was probably part of the problem, but when you're 15 you'll take what you can. Missed both goals going for a pish that day and it's become a thing now, usually during Scotland games, the most recent one being the Norway game equaliser, so you all have my pish to thank for that.

  8.

Good thread, just enjoying reading through these. Actually just posted a top fives for Glasgow city centre-ish pubs elsewhere.

I love drinking in the Woodside Inn in Maryhill, every other Saturday, I walk in and the lassie just starts pouring me a Guinness, have a chat with the old regulars and then just sit and listen to the quiet pub chatter going on until the other lads arrive, my brain finally free from a week of work and the kids. Independent pub, even when it gets busy they have a lot of staff so service isn't an issue and usually a good pint of Guinness. I'm probably biased, but it's hard not to like.

It's not my favourite, but I do quite enjoy jumping into Waxy's at the back where the lane is. Was always a good stop for a few Guinness after the train back from Edinburgh. People travelling were always in and out due to the proximity of the train, hearing peoples stories of Glasgow and one time watched this lassie make her boyfriend sit for a good 15 minutes to take a picture of them and the food while he so desperately wanted to just eat. Good people watch due to the lane as well.

After a home win the walk back up to the town was brilliant.

In the 70s & 80s home and away fans used to “meet” up at the fountain gardens! 🥊

Drank in the Alamo before Thistle won the league in 2002, I think I was 15, for some reason we were drinking a lot of vodka orange and I'm fairly sure I got a vodka and orange which was made up of diluting juice. We moved onto the Caledonian? I think, more vodka and actual orange juice and I spewed in the pub, not even close to the toilet, got hauled out, still made the game and went out drinking afterwards.

Used to jump into Blue Blazer a lot when I worked on Morrison St, also liked Thomson's on Morrison St, always seem to be the same two good lads (mind the older one giving us a whisky on the house for some reason) working the bar, even this year when I popped in, same guys. Both good pubs.

No one will agree, but Glasgow (City centre-ish)

    1. Laurieston

    2. The Horseshoe

    3. The Doublet

    4. Scotia

Honourable mentions for the Woodside Inn, Bon Accord, Sparkle Horse and Old Toll Bar

If you say the Park Bar, Ben Nevis, Islay Inn (could maybe accept the Grove), some random Irish bar you think is amazing or something like Howlin' Wolf, Butterfly n' the pig or the Pot Still, you're actually wrong.

The 1.0 and 1.2 Dig-T engines had a batch with the wrong sized pistons ring fitted.

If you have one and its using oil then youre almost definitely going to need a new engine.

We had one at 20k miles burn out a valve and require a bottom end rebuild too because of it.

Ah ok Nissan engines, thought there was a general reason to avoid small engines there that wasn't "they are slow" etc

    Thanks though.

There was 4 wee laddies playing FIFA when I boarded. It was quite good listening to the new YT's chat. As the night went on and females appeared (One from Shetland telling her lad from Darlington she loves him - she's about 10) they guys got boisterous. Move onto about 10pm and people are retiring to sleep on the chairs, these wee laddies become little cûnts. They poured water over a couple fold who were asleep then legged it, I was raging but I was a wee cùnt too at one time. I put a jumper over my head to block out light and they reappeared, I felt the chairs in front moving and then pulled the jumper up and said "Go for it you little cúnt" to the wee laddie holding a cup of water. They all legged it and 5 minutes later one of their dads come through and I was pointed out. I kindly told him in no uncertain terms if he even dares try to speak to me out of turn there's a can of Pepsi going over him and that's worse than the water the kids have been pouring over people in this lounges head. Without saying a word he trooped off and about a half hour later I was approached by the woman who was working in the shop who told me I had been reported to staff and to be careful.

Reported for what?! Being alert enough not to get water poured over you, then they go crying to their dad about it! At least when I was a little fucker when I was younger if I got caught for it I just took it on the chin.

Best way imo. I booked everything in an excited rush just after the Spain win and plumped on Berlin just because everyone else was going for the Ruhr valley and tickets might be easier to come by for Berlin, Hamburg and Leipzig. If I'd taken my time I'd have gone for somewhere like Hanover or further south in case Stuttgart and Munich come into play.

I think Berlin is actually a decent location for stuff to do football aside, one of the main reasons we went for it, cancellable though so if no games are anywhere near it will probs try a non host town / city as well. I couldn't be arsed with fans partying every night in a city anyway, sound old as f**k and I'm not even that old.

Sorry mate I'm the wrong person to ask. I doubt they'll appreciate the historic sites at their age and I honestly don't know where would be family friendly.

Most big cities have zoos if that helps? I reckon Berlin and Hamburg would be the best two places for you but I'd be guessing completely.

Cheers lads, was worth a try. I'll maybe just book flights back and forth if I can't figure something out.

  14. Asked this elsewhere on the Euro 2024 travel thread but might be more appropriate here.

Quite a high chance of staying in Berlin for the Euros for two weeks, was going to see if the missus and kids (will be 4yr and 1yr old) wanted to come out for one of the weeks. I guess I want to know is this a stupid idea? Is there enough to do for kids (I see there is a zoo and aquarium, also picked Prenzlauer Berg area) too young to understand the historical stuff? Is there a glaringly obvious other choice for families in Germany I should look at instead?

@German Jag @Stellaboz sorry thought I'd tag some German based forum users as I didn't think the chances of this being read was very high!

This was doing my head in yesterday driving home from the in laws from Glencoe to Tyndrum, some bellend in a Tesla and another car, slowing down to 35/40 most corners and then booting it on the straights. I got a chance to pass one who sped up to almost tailgating the Tesla to try and stop me pulling back in and then acted apoplectic I'd passed him, probably deeming me the dangerous driver. Full family in the car at the time, really don't know what goes through peoples heads deliberately endangering peoples lives like that. I think I'll end up Vinnie Jones'ing some c**t that does this to me again honestly.

Also came as close as I've been in my life to a head on with another driver overtaking a group of cars near the Commando memorial, slowed to about 20mph and was partly in the ditch as he squeezed past. Weirdly was fairly calm about the incident knowing I could ditch the car and be ok, but overall not a pleasant experience. Starting to really hate the A82 when it's not just me in the car.

    9 minutes ago, eez-eh said:

What problem do you think I’m part of?

The way it was worded, you sat behind itching to overtake and using wording like taking a chance, didn’t scream completely safe to me. Maybe I picked it up all wrong.

I’m not denying the other guy was a p***k about it. Sometimes it’s good to question if you could have done anything differently even if the fault lies with someone else.

That's your wording, not mine. I think I've reached my conclusion based on your last few posts. Have a nice day.

  16. 18 hours ago, Loonytoons said:

I've never understood why people use the argument of having family in the car for a reason for driving more safely.  You should be driving safely all the time.  You also shouldn't have to rely "heavily" that a car you are overtaking is a fanny.  There would be no overtaking at all if that was the case.

I've mentioned this previously, the utter worst kind of c**t on the road endangering everyone around them because they think people shouldn't be overtaking.

    17 hours ago, eez-eh said:

Yeah I agree risky overtakes should be avoided regardless of who’s in the car. It wasn’t me who brought up the family in the first place.

Where have I said my driving style changed based on the family being in the car?

The statement was "Full family in the car" to emphasize the point that, this driver had no regard for who or the amount of lives he put at risk and why I wouldn't be Vinnie Jones'ing the c**t.

  17. 19 hours ago, eez-eh said:

Does nothing from the first paragraph make you question your own driving decisions? With a full family in the car you’d surely be waiting until it was absolutely clear cut before overtaking, not taking a “chance” and relying heavily on the car in front not to be a fanny. All for the sake of getting 1 car further forward.

Let me get this right then, I shouldn't overtake when safe to do so, in case the person in front is a fanny? Should we all just sit behind each other in a big precession until we reach our destination then? You then question another poster about whether it was safe to do so, why would I ever overtake when it wasn't safe to do so, it was a massive straight completely clear, is that ok now?

In all honesty you sound like part of the problem on the roads. This "1 car further forward" argument is nonsense, have you never heard of progressive driving? Do you think I'm planning to stop at that one car I've passed, it's a long journey and I'll pass as many cars as I like in a safe manner.

18 hours ago, Empty It said:

The OP clearly states that it was safe to pass before the dangerous driver closed the gap for no reason therfore making it an unsafe manoeuvre, the arsehole is definitely the driver closing the gap and deliberately endangering OP.

Thank you, this seemed obvious to me when I wrote it as well.

I'm in a similar boat - drink too much especially at weekends. When I'm driving in the morning I don't drink the night before and don't miss it one bit. Just habit - one I need to change. I'm at the stage where I wake up feeling rotten and a headache can last all day.

It serves no real purpose either, I'm just as happy without it I think. I usually don't suffer much of a hangover though, nothing I can't deal with until a wee curer anyway. I think if I felt like hell it would be easier to say f**k that anymore. I'd say football with the lads is the main reason I end up re-starting after stopping for a while, one day turns into many far too easily. I need to give driving to a game a try, the only thing would be sitting watching my mates drink without me feeling left out and then putting up with the shite chat.
