Think that's a stretch. 1600 season tickets sold at the Rovers which is their best for at least a decade vs what? 2500 or something for us? OK they'll get Viaplay Cup money but we have the Nisbet money which wouldn't have been budgeted for at the start of the season. Raith have brought in Smith, Murray, Hamilton, Dubrowski etc on decent money... I'd be very surprised if the Wee Team were offering much bigger wages than we are. In fact, in terms of wage bills, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up 3rd highest behind Dundee Utd and Partick Thistle.

    Conservatories ain't cheap tbh.

  2. Thats almost a perfect draw to be honest.  Great day out, enough of a crowd to benefit the club financially, an obvious increase in opposition standard, but not so much as to write off the game.

Chuffed with that, I do think there is a bit to work on - but getting through this group represents us doing something we couldnt last season.  First step forward.

I saw James and Razorlight in Dundee last night.

I'm not a huge fan of either band, but I went along for the hell of it as there aren't that many gigs in Dundee these days.

Razorlight were okay, but I think they'd sound better in a small indoor venue.

James were really good. They played most of their hits, though the crowd was left disappointed that they didn't play Laid. I was also impressed that they didn't bother with all that encore bullshit, they just played their set then fucked off the stage.

First gig in a while where I've stayed sober. The queues for the bars were insane so I just gave up.

Thought it was a great gig, first time I've seen James but I enjoyed it.

The queues were fucking mental, probably impossible to get drunk there.

  4. I'm encouraged that we've went through unbeaten, and won the 2 games we "should" have.

My concern is that we haven't seen any real evidence of a fundamental shift in the real issues we had vs last season.  To only score 5 goals combined against Albion Rovers and Annan, when you look at the chances created, is pretty concerning - as is the manner of the first goal conceded today.

I'm sorry but that was utter pish. We should have qualified from this group without having to worry about Dundee tommorow. Conceded goals today are criminal. Players in the last few minutes wandering of the park at walking pace. Dues the idiot of a manger not know we really needed a couple of more goals

It was blatantly obvious that the team were really trying to add to the goal difference, really no idea where you've got that from.

There's plenty to work on, and there's a wee bit of pressure and expectation building on the manager, but resorting to name calling in July is a bit much.

  6. I'm a bit disappointed we haven't seen anything of Euan Murray to be honest.  Corr is young and with potential,  but I don't imagine he's first choice - and we will be going into our first league game not having played our first choice centre half partnership.

Still think we are going into the new season with not a huge amount of obvious difference in our weak areas.  What we've seen so far is an incredibly frustrating and wasteful side in attack, prone to conceding daft goals - which is just a repeat of last season.

League cup ultimately carries little weight in terms of how a league season will go - but I'd say there are still plenty questions.

  7. Disappointing not to win that in the 90 minutes to be honest, we were very good indeed in that 2nd half.  Frustrating that we conceded another goal from a set piece.

I'm not convinced with Big Kev, looks pretty suspect and lacking confidence with crosses.  But, good saves in the shootout - hopefully that helps his confidence.

Another game that we would have won with a decent centre forward on the pitch tbh.  Hopefully we start Murray and Hamilton on Saturday.

All of that said, I'm being a bit harsh there -  we had more shots (or did with not long to go when they flashed the wee graphic on the screen) and had the better chances, without the bulk of possession.  Thats progress - and ultimately reduced Kilmarnock to not much in the way of chances.

  8. The appointment of Yogi was a decent shout on paper - his record at that point was pretty good. Can't really criticise the club for that.  Anelka was obviously a bizarre situation, but I guess the club were pretty rooked financially.

The Vaughan loan .  I seemed to remember Vaughan wasn't having the best of seasons, and it was just off the back of his first ACL the season prior.  The decision to send Vaughan out on loan, whilst unpopular (and not one I personally would have agreed with) wasn't the craziest shout ever.  Sending him on loan to a team 4 points behind us, who went on to play a part in relegating us with his help....wow.  What was even worse was effectively swapping him for Ryan Stevenson.

The Goodwillie one will always be the craziest decision.  Even looking beyond the obvious reason why it was an awful idea, there are 3 things in particular that I will never understand.

       1. How that decision went through multiple people.  I'm not surprised that someone mooted the idea, but the fact that several people thought "yeah, this will work out" and nobody with that power putting their foot down and stopping it was fucking wild.

      2. The fact our interest in Goodwillie was leaked in the papers a month prior, to almost universal condemnation, and the club still went ahead anyway.  The equivalent of testing the waters, finding out it was full of sharks, then proceeding to swim in them with a suit made out of steaks.

      3.  Why Raith Rovers thought they could make it work.  Goodwillie was obviously playing well below his level, but nobody made that leap to sign him.  That alone should have set alarm bells ringing.  Everyone knew why he wasn't playing a higher level, and if it was a good idea then bigger and better run clubs than Raith Rovers would have made that leap.

That time in particular was just terrible.  I personally still went to the games, but the atmosphere around the place was just surreal.  I remember going to the Hamilton game the weekend after he signed, and it was like a morgue - until someone turned up wearing a shirt with "Goodwillie, 9" on the back.  Never thought I'd see the day where John Mcglynn wasn't held in the highest esteem by most Rovers fans considering what he did for the club in his time, but its fair to say his legacy has been soured somewhat by it.

  9. I was 13 when Paquito signed for the Rovers, so was old enough (just) to realise just how fucking good he was - and how ridiculous it was to see him play at that level.  Some of the jobbers he was against in the 3rd tier was ridiculous, as was the way he literally glided past them.  My favourite ever Rovers player, absolute class - and seems like a really lovely guy.

I'm really interested to see how we get on against Kilmarnock.  Our away form was hideous last season, taking 2 points from 36 from the teams who finished above us.  That is the main thing that needs to be addressed in the season ahead, so ideally I'd like to see us score some goals in a game without having 4 thousand chances - snatching some points would be just braw.  That will come from being vaguely competent in either box.  I'd also like to see us score a shit goal, a scramble in the box or similar.

I'm really happy with the signings we've made, my main concern is keeping players fit.  Can't help but feel we need another option up top, and a holding midfielder.  I've bored myself saying it, but there is a huge amount of pressure on the signing of Hamilton IMO.  If he is injured or suspended, I just can't see that quality in the opposition box.  Someone last season said that we have all the striking instinct of a Tory cabinet, and that's all I could think of watching the game last midweek.  A genuine presence in the opposition box is what we need to go to Ayr, Morton, Partick et al and get a result (even a draw, as we took zero points from those grounds last season)

It's also difficult to see how Murray keeps the deluge of attacking players when everyone is fit (lol) - I still wouldn't be surprised to see at least one player leave the club, even if its on loan. (I'm assuming Arnott, Mitchell and Masson will be out on loan again also).  Whilst they aren't the same type of player - Gullan, Vaughan, Smith, Easton, Mullin, Ross, Connolly aren't going to be asked to do drastically different jobs - and I doubt any of these players signed to be on the bench.  I do appreciate the depth, especially after how last season ended, but it's difficult to see everyone being happy - especially given the manager has stated he's looking for potentially 3 more bodies.

I do have a feeling we will be okay this season however.  There is a real amount of expectation on the manager of the club and at the end of the day, if we aren't at least a decent £20 bet to finish top 4 at the end of October, then I can see the new regime having their first big decision to make.  I doubt all of the kings horses and all of the kings men have been brought in to finish 7th again, and whilst this is far from a win or bust season - I don't think Murray has a huge amount of time to get things ticking along.  Which is absolutely fine by me, its a big season ahead.  And if worst comes to worst, I think the club is a relatively attractive proposition for another manager to come into.
