If we’d played 3 Premiership sides and been skelped in them all you’d have folk saying that we must now have no confidence and would've been better playing lower level opposition. Cannae win.
Mahady barely got a kick for us. He went out on loan and was fairly unspectacular from that I gather.
To be fair, Rovers won today and didn't really flag up any major concerns, so people need to create something else to complain about.
Claude Anelka's Rovers side drew with then Premiership Dundee Utd in a pre season game. That should end any relevance people place as to the standard of opposition in these games, they are glorified training sessions that fans just happen to attend in order to get their football fix. They are of no more value or relevance than the bounce games you see mentioned as a footnote in the Courier throughout the season.

Haven't seen anything in pre season to be majorly alarmed about. I am a bit cautious regarding the injury situation, particularly with Matthews and Brown. Also we obviously need another signing at centre half, but will need to wait and see how Murray addresses. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if this player mentioned is Patterson, partially to add depth at full back and also to allow Dick to cover centre half. That isn't a long term solution, but will buy us a bit of time.
We were absolutely fine today, East Fife offered absolutely nothing in the match other than a pretty lame attempt by Austin early on. Its little more than a glorified training session, but didn't show up anything massively alarming. Ultimately, we will learn more in the first 45 minutes against Dunfermline than we have in all 4 of these matches.

Brody Paterson still on trial with us?
If he is, he wasnt in the squad today.

Disagree.
Raith look like they lack strength in depth. We used 19 players without weakening the side. A softish handball and a goalie straying from his line was the difference between the teams.
We could well be facing each other in the league in 2014-15.
There was probably 4 or so starters not even in our squad today.
East Fife were treating the game like a competitive tie with some of the tackles flying in tbh. Rovers eased off in terms of pressing and intensity vs the game against Kelty last week, but even then could tell there was a gap in quality between the sides today.

Difficult to read too much into that. East Fife were absolutely flying into challenges, and given it was a friendly there was literally zero point matching that.

Earliest I left was after 35 minutes at Ross County in the Challenge Cup, when Cuthbert was in charge.

What’s the budget available? You don’t know and neither do I because it’s not our job to know. We now have 3 or 4 full time employees to do that job. It seems they have blown the budget on too many wingers and not been able to attract our first or second choice centre backs
Do you not need to know what the budget was before saying that?

All this chat around the club haven't learned is very unfair, considering we are still in pre season.
A lot of business has already been done, including a genuine championship standard striker and an experienced centre back. The final pieces aren't in place yet, but it's a real shame to see some starting to trot out lines like this at this stage.

Liam Dick gets a lot of unfair criticism he's absolutely fine at Centre Back. I do agree its not ideal and we need more signings in that area, but if he needs to play there for a bit before that happens, that's absolutely fine. He's a better option than Nolan, in my opinion.
Appointing Potter as a director of football won't suddenly unearth a wealth of defenders we didn't have access to previously, who arent too young, too old, and have the relevant experience and capability to start at this level straight away. I'dsay we are in better shape than we were going into the first league game last season, and we still have the best part of a month before then.
I can't see it personally, but if the Considine rumour was true one look at St Johnstones squad suggests it would take them bringing players in to let anyone out. We've no idea what moving parts are in play to make potential deals happen.
Also it's pre season. There is zero need to panic at this stage.

I dont mind Dick as a centre back, right enough - doesn't feel like a huge upgrade over last season's defence mind...
True, but feels like a decent upgrade on how we went into the first league game last season - keeping in mind loans would likely happen into the first month or so.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Liam Dick at centre back, with Patterson signed as a left back - at least to start the season off with.

20 odd years ago there wasn't much in ours and Falkirks attendances. Since then they've had a new stadium, been in 2 Scottish Cup finals, and spent a decent chunk of time in the Premiership. They will have grown their support during that period.
Same time frame for Raith Rovers has seen 2nd place in this league once, 3rd place once and 4th once. Other than that a mixture of absolute keech and "alright', with 2 absolute shit shows in Anelka and Goodwillie.
We've had a decent transfer window, but it will take success on the pitch to make a material difference.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on season ticket sales so far and what would be a successful number of sales once the serious stuff starts?
I’m probably in the minority of being a bit underwhelmed at the numbers so far given how many of them are now free, coupled with the significant improvements both on and off the park.
How many of the 1.4k are free?

Ross is absolutely fine as a footballer and will easy get a club whenever he moves from the Rovers.
My issue is that we haven't seen anywhere near enough from him relative to the length of contract etc.

A lot of the issues yesterday were caused by not having a holding midfielder, or a centre forward. We have proven player(s) at this level in both of those areas that didn't feature.
A competent striker for example, would see that game out of sight.
It does, however, push an inordinate amount of pressure on those areas of the pitch. We are asking 2 players who haven't made it through all of pre season, to effectively be available the entire season.
Its still early days though - I'm really keen to in particular to see Hamilton get some minutes.

The second season in a row we are struggling for defenders, yet we are told to be patient. The whole debate during last season was the need to strengthen defence and attack. Yes we’ve strengthened up top. But Murray as a defender in his playing days just can’t seem to identify what’s required for those positions. We have two kids a centre half that can’t run and Liam Dick who isn’t very good in any defensive capacity. We might score a few more goals ( hopefully). But we’ll lose just as many if we don’t get what’s required. Defence should’ve been the priority at the beginning. Not trying to be negative, but those predicting we’ll finish in the top 4 are deluding themselves. It’ll be another season where defence lets us down.
Liam Dick is absolutely fine, and we probably looked our best defensively last season when he played centre half along side a "kid".
The goals we lost yesterday we absolutely nothing like the main defensive problems from last season. If you are going to lose the rag after a pre season friendly, at least watch it.

Ah, people losing the rag after a pre season friendly. Good to know the good vibe lasted long.
All we need is an experienced, but not too experienced, young but not too young 8ft tall centre back that nobody else knows about.

Yeah had a great game against Ayr at Somerset Park
Fair enough, I missed that one.
I agree with those who saw we need another centre half though.

Has Masson played centre half for us ? I remember some decent performances at right back, but absolutely nothing to suggest he should be starting at centre half.

Playing exactly as you'd expect q side wirh no centre forwards, and no proper holding midfielders to play.
It's a game that means absolutely nothing at the end of the day, but it's fairly obvious we need to keep Matthews/Brown and Hamilton fit and available.

Hmm, I can see why people like it I guess, but it's not for me.

Is Jamie Watson any use lads? Is he usually a right back?
Was a decent enough right back at League 1 level.

I thought Corr started off really nervous, but grew into the game. Admittedly I didn't have a great view of the action down the other end in the 2nd half, but thought the defence as a whole struggled a bit as Mcallister and Hester got a grip on things. I thought he looked better than Masson at centre half.
None of that should be confused with sering him as a starting centre half at championship level. As a first impression of a youngster with pretty much zero experience at our level, it looked like there was potential there.

Problem is, progression from the group can carry significant financial gains that can impact bringing extra players in.
