The plastic pitches in Scotland are a joke tbh. They should be banned in the top flight. They look shite on telly and are not conducive to good football.

  2. I love that this international star golfer is standing holding one of the most prestigious trophies in world sport, next to a road sign on the outskirts of Oban on what looks like a cold, driech day.  "GET IN THERE!"

Go f**k yourself Jon. And don’t mention Seve’s name again

I made this point yesterday - and by it, I meant that he's never missed a chance to mention Seve in relation to competing in majors, the Ryder Cup, etc.  So, he's built up an image of being a golfer who cares deeply about history and (Spanish/European) heritage - all of which counted for nothing last night, especially when he uttered the words "grow the game" in the LIV bullsh1t bingo.

But I must admit to wondering - if Seve had the chance to blow the PGA tour (which he hated) to smithereens by taking half a billion dollars to play somewhere else, while being exempt for majors for the next few years - would he maybe have done it??

I am 99.99% certain that Seve wouldn't have agreed to put on that jacket, at least...

  4. This is all really very messy isn't it?  I wonder why Rory is immediately standing up for Rahm having treated quite a few former teammates like sh1t?

If the Framework agreement legitimised everything in June then he'd have been fine with, say, Sergio getting a pick for this year's RC?  There were rumours that a certain J. Rahm wanted that to happen...

Rory McIlroy is calling for a change to the Ryder Cup rules in the aftermath of Jon Rahm’s move to the LIV Golf League.

In an interview with Sky Sports, McIlroy made it clear he has no ill-will toward Rahm and wants the Spaniard to be his teammate at Bethpage Black in 2025.

“Jon is going to be in Bethpage in 2025 so, because of this decision, the European Tour (DP World Tour) are going to have to rewrite the rules for the Ryder Cup eligibility,’’ McIlroy told Sky. “There’s absolutely no question about that – I certainly want Jon Rahm on the next Ryder Cup team.

“Is it disappointing to me?’’ McIlroy said of Rahm’s decision. “Yes, but the landscape of golf changed on June 6th, when the framework agreement was announced and I think because of that it made the map from the PGA Tour LIV a little easier for guys.

“They let the first guys really take the heat and then this framework agreement legitimized basically what LIV was trying to do, then I think it’s made it easier now if that’s really what you want to do.’’

I suppose the one thing Elgin have going for them is that they aren’t Lossie.

    Or Inverness.

    Or Forres

But Lossie often have a free RAF airshow during matches, and Forres Mechanics have an excellent wee ground and a silly/cool name.

I find St Johnstone very, very uninteresting, despite their cup double.  Their oversized lego stadium with the multicoloured (including yellow and red) seats annoys me too.

The same Seve who missed the 1981 Ryder Cup because he was fighting with the European Tour over appearance money, and because he was spending too much time on the more lucrative PGA Tour?

Seve eventually became Mr European Tour, but he wasn’t always that dependable

Seve was right. The organisers of events in the UK were paying appearance fees to leading Americans but not him. So he boycotted the events and went elsewhere. The 81 Ryder Cup was a selection shambles.

Everyone has their price I guess, and the Saudis know this. There was a near inevitability about this (and football, tennis etc) once they got their foot in the door.

Professional golf (primarily the PGA Tour) has fucked itself by not reading the room. Coasting for years on the back of Tiger, the money and the viewers are slowly drying up now and the Saudis have sniffed the blood in the water.

I agree that this is all inevitable and that money talks etc., but how exactly do you suggest the PGA Tour could have avoided the present situation with the Saudi state investment fund buying up players into their lame league with giant suitcases of cash? How could they have read the room better?  Yes, the regular events are nothingy/dull and the US TV coverage is by all accounts terrible, but fixing those things would not have headed off LIV.

As for Seve - he was loyal to the European tour when he could have made far more money playing full-time in America - he had a card for 2 seasons and was suspended in the second one for not playing enough there. Admittedly that was a time when the Euro tour was competitive and more prestigious. The best way to get one over on the PGA tour these days would be to rebuild the credibility of the European tour, and you're not currently allowed to play LIV and Euro tour so I am not convinced Seve would have headed to the 3 day, no-cut events option for the money - at least, not at his competitive peak as Jon may be doing.

  8. I've always liked Big Jon, and he has multiple more majors in him - but if he goes, I reckon that fails the "What would Seve do?" test and he should be banned from ever mentioning Seve again (which he likes to do, a lot).

  9. My tickets turned out to be for Romania v Play off winner 1 (Ukraine? Hopefully not Israel...) - meh, but will no doubt be a great day out in Munich.  Glad it wasn't an England game or in a city full of England fans.

Bonus is that we're there from the Thursday night and got flights/accom sorted a while back, so will be in the city for Scotland v Germany.  Who knows, might even somehow land a ticket for it.

If Gordon can regain his fitness, I'd be happy to have him between the sticks. By god he deserves it.

The thing I'm worried about is that there will be the best part of a billion eyes watching us against Germany. Robertson is probably the only player to experience the equivalent in a football match (champions league final). McTominay, Tierney, McGinn and McGregor have all played in big games, but nothing like this. Hopefully none of our players get overwhelmed by the occasion.

This is why having previous tournament experience is going to be so vital.

Don't get me wrong, I love Craig Gordon, but a 40-year-old recently returned from a horror leg break isn't a brilliant option either, however wonderful it would be to see him at the finals (even then, I'd have him in before Clark and Kelly if he's played some club football and done OK).

Less worried about the sense of occasion - we had that at home v Spain recently and away at Wembley in the last Euros and were fine.  The World Cup 98 team weren't global superstars and they were extremely close to a result against a much, much better team than this current German gang.

Whoever we got out of pot 1 was largely an irrelevance, take a good team and they'll gub everyone in the group, a poor team is vulnerable to everyone in the group. I think Hungary are the toughest or second toughest pot 2 side and Switzerland the second toughest pot 4 side, I think in any other group we'd be favourites for third at least but not in this one.

I agree with most of that but Germany are struggling and will be under a tonne of pressure in the opener - I think we benefit from playing them cold in game 1 rather than in game 3 when they/we might be needing a win to qualify.  We have a chance to get a result for the ages and the players will know that.  On the other hand, both Hungary and the Swiss were tough draws from their respective pots as you said. Could have done with the diddy playoff winners.

Also, we really, really have to hope Gunn is fit and ready on 14/6 as the alternatives are a bit scary.
