A lot of nations in Europe have legal requirements for their national team matches to be shown FTA, I think it should be strongly considered here.

But according to the numbers guy above, he doesn't care, so everything is fine; affordability is not an issue worth considering; and Ian Maxwell of the SFA has made several tedious statements on the matter, so subject is now closed.

Shouts for US captain? There was a lot of speculation around Woods but he seemed to shoot that down at his presser in Bahamas

There's really no one obvious if Tiger's not doing it.  Looking back through the past few teams, most of the ageing stars who might have been captains went to LIV (Phil, DJ, Reed, Bubba - the latter would have been pretty funny given how eccentric he is). If it's not a repeat of someone who's already done it then you're scraping around at the likes of W. Simpson,  Kuchar, Cink, Snedeker, etc.  Not exactly inspiring... Then you have old guys who never got asked before like Duval, O'Meara and Couples.

£59/year according to @Caledonian1 (£5/month). Unemployed, I get it - everyone else? it's cheaper than a hell of a lot out there including Champions League football or clubTV or the license fee. I spent £7.99 a month and you always had the option to cancel in the months it wasn't used.

In the affordable category, great value for money. Included all the Nations League games, Ice Hockey, Rugby, Norwegian TV series, films and Crime TV. Probably a little too niche to be successful, didn't have enough positive press (that it deserved) and people aren't necessarily that interested in watching La Liga or Estonia v Poland. That's a shame because it was a fantastic product which added to the increased quality in coverage of the SNT games all for £5/month - absolute bargain.

State pensioners? And have you heard of the cost of living crisis at all?  You are correct that Viaplay wasn't expensive for most, but some/many folk don't have any disposable income.

Perhaps The SFA explored the possibility of an FTA arrangement with BBC or Channel 4. Saying they've been lazy and didn't try is a leap - you don't have a basis for that. Perhaps they have made a choice having weighed the options and come to the conclusion that the best way to grow the game in Scotland is to sell the rights to the highest bidder to fund the facilities legacy and accept the opportunity cost of increased exposure to the Scottish public.

Perhaps they did. However, in that case, for PR reasons alone I think they would have told us they had explored it or tried their best but it wasn't possible. I don't remember hearing anything like that come out.

I understand the need to generate money to support the game. There are many ways to do that and TV rights are just one.  I also strongly believe that Scotland games should be on FTA TV for everyone in the country to watch - and although I understand how the deals are done, and that sport is mainly broadcast on subscription these days, it sticks in my craw that you can watch England (and Wales) games up here on FTA, but not our own - a ludicrous state of affairs.

It’s not an official language of the UK. Welsh is.

The English FA and UEFA have an arrangement to ensure their games go to a FTA bidder (qualifiers, at least - although Sky quickly found out there was little value in the Nations League). They can do that because they have the clout and can suck up any reduction in the settlement.

The SFA have somewhat less clout, and can’t really suck up any reduction in the settlement.

I'm not sure where clout comes into it -surely the SFA could also have come to the FTA arrangement with UEFA, and fairly easily, as our rights are worth a lot less?  I get that the SFA doesn't want to lose money, but the EFA have demonstrated that the SFA could have looked for a side agreement and pursued FAT broadcasts of the Scotland national team's games, in the public interest. They didn't try to do so; instead they just lazily saddled fans with yet another sports subscription to pay for.

Channel 4, which is a UK-wide state-owned broadcaster, could also have explored Scotland's games along with England's.  They could have streamed ours on the website if there were clashes.

They got one home draw; the first leg was played at home because they earned a seeded spot (same as us).

I don't think them being lucky to beat us in 2012 to ultimately finish 5th in the group is an example of The Luck of the Welsh.

Again, plenty of other countries have had a player as good as or better than Bale yet they've at the very least performed equally to Wales.

I just think this is all a case of confirmation bias. When Wales succeed folk on here think that they're some uniquely lucky team spanning seven or eight years, but when they don't (like their abysmal performances in the World Cup) I suppose their luck just didn't fancy turning up?

Being drawn to play both their playoff finals (assuming they get to the next one) at home is quite lucky - away to Poland would be a much harder task. They were lucky to beat Ukraine who played them off the park last time. Being a tiny (non-)country yet producing one of the world's most valuable and deadly players was extraordinarily lucky, and he happened to be really annoying with it. Their luck finally ran out in the WC when Bale's legs had gone.

I didn't say they were "uniquely lucky", and I'm not claiming to be making scrupulously researched scientific statements here. We all have teams we can't stand, and the Welsh football team are mine, so of course I will magnify their perceived spawniness. The end.

This makes a lot more sense than "omg does anyone else think Wales are soooo lucky?!"

They were extremely lucky to take 6 points off us in the qualifiers in 2012-13 (?); two dodgy penalties and an incorrectly disallowed goal to put us 2 up.  Funnily enough this is never mentioned when they go on about us stopping them from reaching the 78 World Cup - a sore point which came up quite a lot in the media coverage before Qatar.  What they neglect to mention is that they needed a win, and the Jordan handball happened midway through the second half at 0-0, and we won 2-0.  In a crucial match the proud Welsh chose to play in, er, England, to make more money.

They were very lucky to have a global footballing superstar (who loved a dive) for a decade, and he almost single-handedly got them to several finals. It's a shame they were such utter dugshite when they finally made it to the World Cup.

    F*ck off Wales.

  7. I would take this draw, although Serbia not ideal from pot 4.  No one in pot 2 gives me the fear.

Only really desperate to avoid France, England, Portugal (10 wins in qualifying), Italy and (in a hopefully N/A scenario) Wales.  Turkey will have a huge support but on the other hand they looked pretty tame in last night's game against the Welsh and weak group winners.

Germany losing 2-0 to Austria last night underlines how much they are struggling atm.

Yes Italy have been rubbish recently but I still wouldn't want to face them as 4th seeds; no one would be surprised if they controlled the game and smothered our glittering creativity to win 1-0.

  8. Got tickets for pot 3 v pot 4 teams in TBC group in Munich on 17/6. So theoretically could be a Scotland match.

Worst case scenario would be the Welsh of but hopefully they're not in it.

  9. Always thought it was odd that Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan were admitted into UEFA, apparently just because they fancied it (i.e., their clubs / FA want the money to made from UEFA competition).  A giant country of desert and steppe in the middle of Central Asia with a capital over 2500kms east of Moscow.

At least Israel have the excuse that all their neighbours hate them and used to regularly refuse to play them back in the day (as would almost certainly still be the case today).

Was looking last night at potential automatic qualifiers and couldn't believe that with one game to go, Moldova, 157th in the world and 181st at the start of the campaign, travel to Czech Republic knowing that a win will get them second place and directly into the finals.

Surely that would be the single biggest upset in the history of any UEFA Qualifying tournament? The group they were drawn into was an absolute shambles but fair fecking play to them if they manage it.

Yeah, I noticed that one too and it would be an incredible outcome if Albania and Moldova qualified from that group - although no doubt it is partly because Czechia and Poland aren't very good at the moment.  You must surely be right about the Moldovans being the lowest world-ranked team to qualify for a Euros if they manage it.

Iceland got to Euro 2016 at the expense of the Dutch - and with hilarious consequences as we know - but I doubt they were as far down the rankings.
