Jackson worked his socks off, but didn’t strike me as particularly confident in front of goal. Our style of play didn’t help, though. Far too often he had to receive the ball with his back to goal, shake off two defenders, and try to create an opportunity - all on his own. No wonder he often ran out of steam when presented with chances. He had to work too hard to make them.

As everyone else has said, really feel for Cooke. He clearly has a right good attitude, and got his head down to earn his opportunity. What a kick in the baws for the lad.

Oh aye, don't get me wrong, I'm not wringing my hands over him having scored a couple of goals. He looked rank rotten when he was here, and we are well shot.

That would do. Folk bemoaning the use of loan deals seem to forget that this is the market we have operated in for many years now, as have all clubs. Some have worked, while others haven't - pretty much the same scenario with players on contacts.

This time last year we had enlisted half a squad of Stubbs' duff jobbers, and were debating the merits of Kenny Miller signing for us. For me, despite the glaring deficiencies in our current squad, we are still in a better position now than we were back then (albeit I am saying this with the benefit of hindsight). It was always likely to be another tough season, such is the market we are operating in. As things stand, there is still scope for us to add a sprinkling of decent additions to the squad, so let's just have a bit of patience and assume that Jim and others at the club know what is required and are busting a gut to get them in.
