Episode three was wonderful imo, completely out of the blue and didn't want it to end and go back to what I'd been enjoying so much before. Did find it quite strange though in an episode that was such a beautifully written depiction of a relationship that they seemed to imply that Frank deduced Bill was gay from his knowing what wine to pair with rabbit and playing the piano

No he wasn't, trapped in the closet was excellent. Tbf all but a handful of sitcoms age awfully as mostly they aren't very funny, just of their time, capturing some sort of zeitgeist in pretty much the same way as the broadest observational standup. Either that or a particular local type of guy like Phoenix Nights or Still Game. It's what makes genuinely interesting sitcoms like it's always sunny so impressive for me. Was the IT crowd ever really that funny? Ayowade's weird affect and Noel Fielding living in a cupboard? The jokes about the office smoking area being miles away? For me the only parts looking back that were good involved Matt Berry and I'm now wondering if based on the above thesis that's only because he's still doing the same schtick now. There's probably only a couple of British sitcoms from each decade that are still good if you don't look through rose tinted specs.

I was thinking about this when the thread first started and can't now remember the example I had but for me it's if the abuse or more wild views etc are prevalent/wrapped in the creation of the art that decides the separate the art from the artist question. And less so on views, I doubt Clint Eastwood and I have many similar opinions but some of his films, like Richard Jewell, have something really interesting to say about the US that a non conservative would struggle to make.

Fair play to VT, one of genuinely a handful of people I've seen who are able to articulate reasonable concerns about the impact of self-ID without some sort of appeal to biological essentialism or revealing some otherwise fundamentally transphobic root of disapproval (to be clear, I think this is because he doesn't hold those views rather than being better at hiding them). This is a difficult issue, and now probably a majority of opponents are behaving increasingly and alarmingly deranged, but the government's refusal to be firm or clear on certain implications of policy helps no one. While Sturgeon deserves credit for continuing to pursue this, as has been mentioned ad infinitum this was essentially universal policy pre trans issue becoming a culture war, it does often feel like her approach to the issue is like that meme except she's turning a big dial that says "trans rights" until part of the audience starts hissing and then performing a partial u turn. That being said, I'm all for her calling out the "saying anything insulting to a woman is misogyny" gang for their own side's toxicity

A point that stuck out from Sam's interesting thread on luck in rugby, especially in the context of what I routinely overthink on here around what could be called the grand strategy of Townsend's Scotland team. Think it describes pretty well the downsides we've seen since the abandonment of the fastest game in world rugby in that, while you can train a team to be better in tight situations, over the span of multiple seasons luck (and there being teams with more experience of winning things) overtakes that coaching.

He was always mental, yeah, but I think he got away with a lot/restrained himself a bit more in the past. I think it was the dearly departed MixuFixit (left the forum, not dead) who summed him up best in that his stuff often looked very well researched but as soon as he got onto a topic you knew more than the average person about you could start to see that he was predominantly a very good presenter of information rather than always right like his followers used to claim

Not something I had previously considered really but the crowdfunding thing is definitely the case. Social media is very obviously at the root of that, alongside a lack of trust in institutions - which I have some sympathy for. Citizen Journalism is a similar phenomenon, seen Musk talking that up recently but the outputs of that largely bleed into things like that citizen app which was incentivising people to find "criminals" or paedo hunters pouring petrol through middle aged lonely men's letterboxes. The addictive qualities of social media seem to be true across class and economic status, which has some very useful outputs. The breakdown of trust in institutions is in part due to a complete impossibility of respecting people in previously respected professions due to their inability to stop posting. In my experience it's generally hard to find for example a broadsheet columnist, silk lawyer or political scientist who doesn't regularly post things which are unbelievably donkey brained. Not that they were necessarily considered geniuses but any mystique or sense that people in high status jobs are broadly cleverer than most has largely gone. Social media also showed everyone that these people do seem to genuinely act as a class, at least at times. Whatever you think of Corbyn for example, or Brexit it was fairly clear that there was a generalised (not sure you could say coordinated) campaign amongst that sort of institutionalised "take" class of people to override those more popular movements. I don't know that that's positive but in the context of the '19 election when you see them now looking around at "why is this government we worked so hard to have elected, in the knowledge that they were awful liars, slanderers and thieves (behaviour we encouraged), behaving like this" it is at least instructive. I think the earlier years of twitter had more mainstream pop culture figures like Rowling or Linehan aspiring to become part of that group, for no reason I can understand, and they had early successes which would have given them the normal positive social media response on steroids. Rowling became such a big figure in the sensible anti-independence movement that she is genuinely pally with most of Scotland's awful political commentariat - Deerin and that fat lad whose name I forget are in a band with her homeopath husband and a similar, if less prominent, figure in Al Murray, and Linehan got a positive reaction on Gamergate. Trans issues really became a point of brain souping for both of them though, and that feedback loop starts acting in less helpful ways. I'm sure, for instance, that Rowling doesn't really see any difference in her initial genuine but misguided intervention and the poisonous nature of her current interactions with that discourse - to her she's walking on level ground instead of careening down a mountainside. Her ability to bed herself into that sort of Labour right, anti-independence part of Scottish and British civil society, as well as her wealth and level of fame, have kept her from having to go the crowdfunder route, whereas Linehan never really had that sort of backing and it was ultimately the sort of nerds he initially interacted with that turned on him. There's also just the scale of his nastiness, I suppose, as his views aren't really very far from the vast majority of the class I discussed earlier. I think your point more explains those who go the other way, like Brand, but to him in particular I'd attribute a greater sense of either cynicism or thickness. I guess as we said in the twitter thread there is ultimately an audience for anything.

Going to Seville at half 6 tomorrow and as my fiancé is from the US we have to go to check-in for a visa check (which takes two seconds and every other airline does at the gate in our experience). There are 7 ryanair flights leaving in the hour before our trip and in similar circumstances last March we got through security half an hour after our flight left despite being there 2.5 hours before. Genuinely planning to be there at half 3 just because of being worried about the organisation of the place
