  1. Unfortunately I can see us losing most or all of our un-contracted players.

Arbroath is a club going in the wrong direction and with a less than positive feel about the place. Plenty of ambitious L1 and even L2 teams that could be an attractive proposition for players looking for a new challenge.

A new manager and clean slate is the only way we can avoid this imo.

Sticking with McIntyre is just delaying the inevitable.

  2. As an aside - I notice in the Stirling 1 Alloa 5 game today that Donnelly was an unused sub for Alloa and Hilson was subbed off for Greg Spence for Albion.

These are guys that have found their level yet Donnelly and Hilson were overly used by Campbell last season and the season before. Simply not good enough for the Championship and barely good enough for L1. Today is the result of 2 years of poor signings and over reliance on sub standard players…. As well as poor managerial decisions of course.

  3. What a fight we put up in the last few weeks. We’ve thrown absolutely everything at the opposition leaving nothing in the tank week on week. The drive and motivation that this amazing management team have instilled has been a sight to see. Continue with this standard of performance and this never say die attitude and we’ll have L1 tied up by Christmas.

    NURSE!!!!!!!

Think our board got spooked by Stuart Malcolm’s one game in charge, a doing at Dunfermline, then rushed the appointment

What absolutely astonishes me is that there wasn’t an advanced succession plan in place. The writing was on the wall for Campbell for the guts of 18 months and it beggars belief that him leaving seemed to catch the board unawares.

I think it was when things started to go wrong (there were several warning signs that a poor season was inbound at the start of last year) Dick felt he was above criticism and couldn’t believe that anyone had the audacity to express their displeasure at the man who nearly took us to the Premiership.

Dick had a ridiculous amount of credit in the bank though and fans knew that and continued to back him for a very long and poor period where numerous questionable decisions were made it wasn’t instantly like that.

But when that happened he got extremely stubborn and like I said earlier in hindsight, as someone who backed him near enough to the very end, did act and come across like a bit of a fud / walloper and massive haver for an extended period of time.

His best days are behind him the man he was when he left the club was a very different man to the one who come in, aged a lot of years literally but a whole lot more figuratively,  but he obviously has brought a feel good factor to EF in the short term and it’s a standard honeymoon spell for him. If that trajectory continues next season they’ll have a good few years to enjoy but if it stalls or goes back the way it’ll end up like it did here.

The guys an absolute hero and done wonders for us but gonna take a few years for that to really sink in and to appreciate it I think after the way it all ended here.

Reading back this thread. Talking to mates. Reading other forms of online media. The overwhelming consensus is a fresh start so I wonder how we address that as a club and what happens now. The writing is on the wall

Agree with the Campbell stuff. I just wish he’d jacked it in after 21/22 saying he’d taken us as far as possible. He would have left as an absolute legend with freedom of the town, a statue, and free pints and bjs for life. Of course his planet sized ego would never have seen him quit at the top, he needed more adulation, more worship, more power.

What he achieved will never be forgotten but his legacy and reputation has, sadly been massively tainted.

As far as the current situation goes - the board aren’t daft and they must see how things are collapsing. Last nights crowd was the lowest, non Covid league attendance we’ve had in years and that included 700-800 season ticket no shows. They will be budgeting for next season and the thought of losing all of that revenue and all the associated income must be terrifying.

People are asking “can we afford to get rid of McIntyre?” when the real question is “can we afford not to get rid of McIntyre?”

    Totally correct.

What the Campbells did  for Arbroath from the near bottom of league 2 to the near promotion to Premiership was unbelievable !- Fact.
Watching the Friday night games I had huge respect and truthfully,  a large part of Envy that Arbroath can do that , why not EF?

Campbell brothers are now working their magic at EF- honestly bearing  in mind the past few years of total agony, loneliness , and hopelessness, its total , total magic.
Should they do for us - 1/2 of what they did for you we are singing from the Methil  rafters!

Wish Arbroath well- can’t wait to be a moaning EF fan after many years in Chapionship complaining about being relegated - bring it on…🙏🙏🙏

Be careful what you wish for ……

Do they have a limit ? No idea

I remember when Campbell came to us and started turning things around immediately. There were one or two Forfar fans who came on and warned us that it would eventually turn sour as it seemed to at every club he’d been at - some of our fans laughed it off, probably including me.

Don't get me wrong when it was good it was very very good but the last 18 months of his tenure was grim on and off the pitch. It was like something changed in him/them after that fateful night in Kilmarnock.

Best of luck to EF though, he will definitely bring success - not sure for how long or to what extent but be prepared for the inevitable fall from grace. It’ll be a blast though while it lasts though and certainly won’t be dull.

  7. I’ll ask a question - can anyone ever remember a manager at Arbroath (or anywhere really, aside from Ferguson at Manchester United), that started off with an atrocious record but turned it round by being given more time, transfer windows etc? Because I can’t.

I believe that you can tell in a pretty short time if a manager is going to be a success or not at a club. Our most successful managers in the last 25-30 years (Bakie, Brownlie, Sheerin and Campbell) all came in, mostly while the club was at a pretty low ebb and turned things around almost immediately. We are getting worse the longer McIntyre is here and that isn’t going to magically change imo.

  8. I know it feels like some of us have been saying this since about October 2022 but this really is a must win game for us.

Even if we do win I still think it’s just delaying the inevitable, it would be nice to get a few more points before the end of the season though and some meagre crumbs of positivity.

Bumped into Gaston after the game. Said he yet to start contract talks but is wanting to stay. Not ready to hang up the gloves yet as he has a few years left in him.

Hope so. His usually very high standards have definitely dropped this season but that’s down to injury and playing behind an underperforming defence.

I was just saying on Saturday that the goalkeeping situation is worrying for next season if he was to go so it’s great news if he stays, gets fully fit and has a good pre season.

I think it was the St Johnstone youth team that Sheerin coached before moving to Gayfield.

If we want an experienced Manager we would just be as well giving McIntyre the chance as he hasn't really had the best circumstances so far.

Every management decision has a risk to it though but I wouldn't be against an experienced player taking over.

Yeah, you’re right it was St Johnstone, he went to Aberdeen after us.

I am not sure it is. I mean we will be in L1 and if he got the job and could keep a core of the guys we’ve got now we should be perfectly ok in L1 next season, we will have the biggest PT budget in the country too. I wouldn’t expect an unbelievable season but I don’t think it would be a big gamble at all. All the above got their chance in L1 apart from Murphy and Brown. Imagine we’d said that about Sheerin.

If there was a sold experienced candidate out there then fine but I can think of absolutely nobody.

I also think he’s that well loved by the fans that we could go and sell 1400 season tickets for L1 again because people would want to back the guy

Perhaps if he had an experienced team around him.

Sheerin had experience as youth/reserve coach at Aberdeen before he came to us. We were also in L2, pre the threat of relegation so there was really nothing to lose.

I see next season as a consolidation season. I know it sounds negative but I’d be pretty happy with a safe mid table to playoff position come next May.  Obviously I want promotion and the title but a season without much drama would suit me just fine.

  12. Seeing as we’re pretty much down, I see no reason why we can’t punt McIntyre and give Gold etc a chance for the rest of the season. If he fancies it that is.

Not sure if I would want to take a gamble on him or other players permanently though. A big job for a first gig. I would rather bring in someone with a good bit of experience and maybe have someone like Gold as player assistant. One for the future perhaps.

None of that matters.  The circumstances do not matter.  I absolutely agree that he has been dealt the worst possible hand, but that changes nothing.  It doesn't matter what the circumstances were, what matters is that he had 2/3rds of a season and lost most of his games.  And just to repeat, it doesn't matter what the reasons are.  I agree its not his fault, and likely nothing would have stopped us being relegated.  I don't think relegation is any reflection on him as a manager, but that doesn't matter.  What matters is that we need a fresh start.

Not sure how old you are, but are you old enough to remember the John Brownlie time?  You could make a damn good argument that relegation was not Brownlie's fault.  The club had older players, we spent every penny we had and then some more making the club division 1 worthy, and the players we ended up with were absolutely dismal.  But we kept faith with Brownlie.  And it was a disaster.  We then went with Steve Kirk for continuity, but that's another story.

Surely we cannot go into a brand new season with a manager tainted, however unfairly, by the disaster of the previous season.  He's got to go for that alone.

Yeah I agree. I would like to give McIntyre the benefit of the doubt but there are absolutely no positives that I can see to merit it.

Insipid performances week on week, crap signings, awful tactics etc etc. I would be all for giving him more time if we were seeing something positive every game but, aside from 25 minutes v Raith, it’s been eye bleeding stuff for months now.

For the record - I don’t blame it all on him, he inherited an absolute shambles but he’s had ample opportunity to at least show a hint of positivity for the future but has failed miserably.

I would rather a total clean slate now or in the summer at latest.

Much appreciated - I am, always have been, and always will be happy to help the club in any way I possibly can. :)

From an archive point of view - I have plans to do a whole variety of things in the years to come. Since releasing the archive, I've got very bogged down in the 'minor details' which take much more time to research.... lots of improvements on friendlies, opposition player names, referee names, programmes, player pictures for our more obscure players and other bits and pieces have been added but I'm very aware that very few people see these things/ particuarly care

Once I've finished pissing about with the above/ as the year progresses I'll hopefully start to produce some more stuff that is more 'seen'/ of interest to more people..... I don't want to say I'll do X/ Y and Z and then it doesn't happen, but I've plenty of ideas with various things happening in the background.... :) Suggestions for things are very welcome!

Considering how much of our history and documentation was lost in the fire, it’s great to have someone willing to put in so much effort on this 👏

Personally I would love to see you get together with Fraser to produce a definitive printed book about the club. Fraser timed his last one really badly, having it published half way through our first title season. Incidentally, I got the first two copies of that book before it went on sale. Collected them hot off the press from Fraser’s house 😆

Another negative about Cove is it takes an age to get out! Our supporters bus was stuck for about 30-40 minutes in the car park. It’s just one road out IIRC?

You’re correct. Better making a day of it though and getting the train up. Plenty good pubs near the train station then a taxi up to Balmoral and book him to pick you up round by IKEA for the return journey to town.

    Permanent stands behind both goals?

Aye. The details are on their website. The temp stands were removed a few weeks ago. The new ones won’t be as large as they were though.

If segregation is here to stay then I’d at least like to see us moved back to the switchie end, or at least have access to it apart from for the Montrose games.

Not a fan of cove. Crappy wee ground with a very small social club. Not a fan of Aberdeen prices for beer either. The Stenny social club is a great wee place

Oh yeah, I agree. Wouldn’t be going if I didn’t live in Aberdeen. They are building permanent end stands so that should improve the ground a little.

I’m obviously used to the prices here but it always pleasantly surprises my Aberdonian pals how cheap Arbroath is in comparison when they’re down for a game.
