The dull dull dull John Swinney thread

I don’t think Scottish Labour will take over Westminster either. I said they’d take over the SNP at Westminster, and I believe they will.- 83 replies

As well as the fact that he was so adamant, yet so wrong. Time to swallow your pride @TxRover -
The dull dull dull John Swinney thread
CarrbridgeSaintee replied to Scary Bear's topic in The Politics Forum
Will Scottish Labour take over the SNP at Westminster and Holyrood? Westminster definitely. For Holyrood, it’ll mostly depend on Operation Branchform. The Holyrood election is still 2 years away. There will be loads of twists and turns.- 83 replies

Low energy John. He was actually quite animated when he announced his leadership campaign though.- 83 replies

Two polls took place after The Vow; an Ipsos MORI one a Survation. Both showed much smaller gaps than the one from the actual result. How is that a lie? If they’d said ‘we will make it permanent’ then that’d have been a lie. Simply stating that it is permanent is just an expression of opinion. Vague and unsubstantiated.. all ifs and buts. The Shy Yoon Effect was apparent in 2014 and probably is now. It would be far harder for polling companies to alter their methodology to account for once in a generation/lifetime events that depend on so many factors.

The gap both before and after The Vow was significantly smaller than the gap from the actual result, which was a whopping and decisive 11% I do believe The Vow had no effect. There was no post-Vow spike for No. Even if it did, so what? It was kept via the Smith Commission. Dodgy polling forced the national parties to come up with it, but I wish they hadn’t. I think the national parties absolutely thought it’d have an effect, but that it turned out not to. If the polling companies refine their polling methods to account for things for the Shy Tory Effect, then they aren’t doing a very good job of it, and it’d be a very hard task. I’d like to see your proof of this.

Fair enough, my apologies.
-
Polling was generous to Yes in 2014 compared to the actual result too, so there's a good chance the gap is actually wider than recent polls indicate.

I’m sure I heard she’s in the lead, with Jenny Gilruth a few points behind. They've managed to get the wiki page up quickly: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Scottish_National_Party_leadership_election According to this, Gilruth, Gray, Flynn and McAllan have all declined? Is that correct?

Good clip that, thanks for posting. Decent turnout there for Inverness Campsie. The haters really need to calm down a bit. Quite a fair article here in the P&J - Apprentice Boys of Derry Inverness march goes smoothly (pressandjournal.co.uk) -
Nicola Sturgeon Arrested, Peter Murrell Charged

I actually wonder what's going on with him. At the time of the referendum, his 'wee blue book' was everywhere, and he was churning out daily forensic analyses of alleged pro-Union bias in everything from broadcasting and print to the institutions, via his blog. Mates of mine poured over his every word, giving me the Rev's take on all sorts of articles and issues. Whilst he made a lot of good points, the nature of the blog meant that they were also unchallenged. He took great pride in boasting of his Twitter blocked list, offering it to anyone Now however? There's very little, if anything, about this sort of stuff, nor is he even making the case for independence. He just attacks the SNP. As for blocking the 'yoons'...? Now he courts us. That being said, he's still easily the best for solid, accurate information. -
The Christian Theology Education Thread

An interesting discussion about the rise and fall of the New Atheist movement, and influence of the robust arguments from Christian apologetics. Brierley's 'Unbelievable?' podcast is a fantastic listen. -
Yeah I’d never vote for him, but that’s because I’m not aligned with his politics. He’s not an idiot though.
-
I disagree with his politics, but with Colin Fox you’re getting someone truly authentic. Massive respect for the guy.

As a Unionist, Humza is an absolute God send. At this point, it’s like he’s actually going of his way to lose votes and dismantle his party.
