Robbo (rightly) gets a lot of flack at the minute because he’s drawing a salary and nobody knows what his job is. But… - he’s got a decent record as a manager (including as our manager) - him becoming permanent manager would presumably mean we go from three big off-pitch salaries to two (surely we wouldn’t hire another “sporting director”?) I think there would be worse decisions than giving it to him for the rest of the season.

Raith vs Caley

Caley to lose Dodds to stay Fans to tweet Repeat, repeat -
As I said in another post, last season’s team wasn’t good enough and was already a big downgrade on the season before. That is not the bar that we should be aiming for. Even if it was, saying that we still have “all but one of that regular back four” ignores the fact that the one we have lost is Robbie Deas, who was by a long way the best defender in the team if not the division. What we have in defence this year is a massive downgrade on what we had last year.

Saying we’ve had a big downgrade from last year doesn’t tell the full story. Last year’s squad was already not good enough, and was a big downgrade on the season before (remember Broadfoot, Chalmers, McAlear, Sutherland, Walsh, etc.) Two years ago we came 3rd in the league. Last year 6th. Continuing that pattern… 9th this year?

Airdrie vs Inverness CT

Had planned to go to this, but got offered a ticket to the rugby so am going to that instead. Says a lot about Caley this year that I’d rather watch a warm up game against Georgia. -
We can’t fill 2 CB spaces with actual centre backs, let alone 3! Agree that we wouldn’t miss playing our current wingers though, and think Billy McKay would be better suited to playing as part of a front 2 than on his own. Interesting idea. All hypothetical though as I’m not convinced Dodds understands our current formation, let alone changing it.

Ayr vs Inverness - 12/8/23

I feel like Delaney has somehow gotten away with less criticism for his defending on that goal because it’s the fifth game in a row where we’ve done something that stupid. Striker is unmarked in the box for so long, he hangs back off him and then lunges towards the other player at the last minute, getting caught in no man’s land. Really poor. Surely we cannot be planning to play him at CB this year. -
That’s two people on this thread who have tried to compare Luis Longstaff and Charlie Gilmour to James Maddison. Maddison has a proven track record of playing at the level that Spurs will need him to play at. Longstaff and Gilmour have had one season each in the Championship - which ended in relegation. We haven’t picked the cream of the crop from Cove, it’s silly to pretend that that’s what we’ve done.

Mulgrew clearly capable of playing at a high enough standard. But, as we all saw last season, capable of being absolutely awful if he doesn’t feel like turning up. To be fair to Billy Dodds, players do often seem to have quite positive vibes about him. Maybe he could tickle Mulgrew’s ego enough to get a tune out of him.

Ridgers Davidson Devine Duffy Harper Carson Gilmour Longstaff Brooks Shaw McKay Think that’s our best team, short of Welsh and McGregor who I think are injured. 2-0 to Queens Park

A big striker might be a good signing. We’ve all seen over the last couple of years that Dodds’ natural tactic is hoof-ball, which doesn’t work with only Billy McKay up front. If Ludovica can be a target man and people like Brooks, Samuels and McKay can play off him, then hoofing it might actually work. The fact that he’s signed for another club this summer (and then presumably been released) doesn’t fill me with hope. Nor does the fact that everyone who has seen him play says he’s awful.
