  1. Quick question - who was the player a few years ago that didn't get picked for scotland (under 21s I think) for not being tall enough or big enough? Can't remember exact quote or who it was
  2. I dont know what the lad Doak is like personally, but there can be a risk to hyping a player and heaping tons of pressure of him at only 16. The kid has incredible talent and I'm massively confident he will at least be on bench a couple of times for Liverpool first team by end of season. Some kids will revel in the pressure and the hype and others it will destroy them at that age. But I do agree it would be very exciting if he were called up. I would think (and hope) the squad for the friendlies will be largely the same. That being said, I'm happy for there to be 3 or 4 spots in squad for young/untested talent to be called up. There will naturally be some injuries or call offs anyway, so may happen organically. The ones that immediately spring to mind for me would be: Calvin Ramsey - Klopp has already stated many times he is part of their first team squad, he is just back in first team training now and is Trents back up on that side. Clearly going to be in and around Liverpools first team once fully fit. Elliot Anderson - Seriously talented, involved in Newcastle first team and a huge prospect. Would have been happy to see him in last senior squad. Paper talk seems to be allegience issues. Happy to test that with a call up Tommy Conway - Great start to the season with Bristol. We need some options for out and out goalscorers. No brainer. Lewis Morgan - A recall. And not that young at 25 but seems to have hit good form in MLS and scoring regular. Something like 18 goals in 35 or something. Would be happy to see him have another crack at international football. Dom Hyam - Been around championship for years and earned his move to Blackburn. Hit ground running there and another man of match award today. 6ft 2 centre back. Can always use some more of them
  3. Anyone fancy predicting our team/squad five years from now. Could be a bunch of same players
  4. The only outfield player available for all three games to not get a single minute on the pitch. He was our saviour last year
  5. Yeah they did very good at the offside trap tonight. Jack Hendry was a huge leader in the defence tonight. He is 7 years older than Hickey and 3/4 years older than Taylor and Porteous. Hendry took charge and led that defence to the clean sheet tonight.
  6. The other great thing that's come from this break is the success of new formation and how some of the squad players have gotten on. If we are playing 4 at the back and Robertson, Tierney, Hickey and Patterson are all available, who plays? I think Hickey has nailed down the right back slot. Who is our first choice centre back pairing now? Genuinely no idea if everyone was available. Jack Hendry has had three colossal games. I think McGregor, McTominay and McGinn pick themselves in midfield but other two midfield positions could be up for grabs. Adams has been magnificent up front but still feel we are lacking a couple of clinical strikers. Goalkeeper as has been discussed is up in the air aside from Gordon Lots of questions to be posed next time we have a match but mostly good problems to have.
  7. Yeah I would say so. Three very different performances. A classy attacking showing, a determined gutsy comeback and a dogged defensive shutout. So many players in and out of the squad, the confidence is there. Excellent all round. Our strongest overall squad in a long long time
  8. Did I just watch McLean stand and watch ball go out of play without even running a step towards it
  9. Agreed. A very solid debut so far. Doesn't look out of place
  10. McLean probably the one player not really pulling his weight so far, not tracking back, not getting forward and not offering much. Needs to be hooked at half time I think. Taylor is massively struggling too but wondering if that's the illness. He needs help down his side and not getting it from McLean
  11. So if we lose to Ukraine, there will be no pot 2 for us, unless Armenia beat Ireland. Simple
  12. I'm not sure at what point SFA have to register their official squad and whether there is an administrative cut off but as for physically getting there, not a chance too late. I would be on phone earlier today to Shankland / Conway and telling them to get to an airport
  13. Ukraine are almost certainly going to better than they were last week and because they need the points, have more urgency and attacking play. My worry with the expected line up is that under the cosh, we are going to be much slower breaking out and moving ball from defence to attack. Whether it's McLean or Jack, neither are likely to stroll forward like McTominay does in that position. Taylor and Hickey are decent but way behind Patterson and Tierney in terms of getting the ball and driving it up field. Both players considerably slower as well I would say. I think it's crucial that Adams and in particular Fraser play which I think they will, as we need outlets further up the park that can break at speed. I think playing Dykes would be a mistake, he offers no pace and whilst he can hold the ball up, I think Adams hold up play is better. Just have a feeling it will be one of those games where its constant pressure and played mostly in Scotlands half and we are defending well but struggling to break and get a foot on the game and hold any sort of possession.
  14. Hmm....certainly alot more worried now that Tierney and McKenna are both out. For some reason, I always feel more secure and confident when KT is in the team. ..............................Gordon........................... Hickey......Hendry......Gallagher.....Taylor ...................McGregor.....McLean................ Fraser..................McGinn.................Christie ..................................Adams............................. I think the team will shape up something like that. The Taylor/Gallagher side of defence gives me the fear, to be the point I would maybe switch Hickey to the left and bring in Ralston. I would prefer a fit and on form Gilmour in the middle but its clearly gonna be McLean or Jack. much less confident now .
  15. I had to move seat last night after about half an hour as the guy behind me was absolutely unbearable with his shouts. Nothing particularly controversial, just utter nonsense. Like pure screaming at the top of his lungs (so in my ear) SEND HIMMMMM!!!! PLAY HIMMMMMM! COME ONNNNNNNNNN! GET IT UP THE PARK!!!! FCUKING KEEP THE BALL! COME ONNNMNNNNN! WHO THE FCUK IS THAT TAE! FCUKING GET HIM AFF! FCUKING BOOOOO! I understand passion, but folk like this just get so angry over absolutely nothing. Genuinely ruined the start of the game for me. Not 20 seconds would go by before he was shouting out some football term that often made no sense to what was happening.
  16. Yeah I think he will play McLean to replace McTominay. He is clearly a player that SC likes and trusts and I think he would drive forward a little more than Jack or Gilmour would so think he will get nod. Adams will come in for Dyles Would also be surprised if Fraser didn't come in too probably for Armstrong
  17. Have been massively impressed with Hickey these last two games. I was one of those (and I'll put my hand up) who doubted his ability to play on the right after predominantly being successful for Bologna on the left but he has settled in with Brentford and Scotland on the right with ease. He doesn't quite have the drive and energy that Patterson brings but I think his passing and link up play is better. Great option to have in the squad
  18. With Turnbull and now Patterson out, Steve Clarke said after the game that there would "definitely be one, maybe two players coming in" With Ralston in as right back cover already, I suspect it will just be a midfielder coming in to the squad. Genuinely think this would be a great time to call Elliot Anderson up to main squad. The lad is clearly an exceptional talent. Get him involved
  19. Although he started off deeper, he was playing much more box to box in the second half although to be fair most of our players were as we continually pressed and played mostly in Ukraines half. But McGregor was definitely the one sitting deeper though and McTominay was getting forward. I thought he was very good, he has a physical presence that none of other midfielders have, made a number of key interceptions and was trying to get involved in attacks. Needs to shoot more though, had a couple of great opportunities for a shot and he shat it and attempted to pass. Be interested to see how deep he plays when we play against someone who is more of a threat than Ukraine were tonight and whether he will have same licence to get forward
  20. f**k any negativity - that was as good a Scotland pressing performance I have ever seen and right up there with the Denmark game last year. I was genuinely very very proud of the players tonight, they pressed everything and forced Ukraine into mistake after mistake. And even though some of our finishing was brutal, not a single player gave up. Head up and kept going and going and finally got our rewards. Special mention again to the difference Austin MacPhee has made to our set pieces. Unbelievable difference over the last couple of years. Another two goals tonight, would be interested to know how many goals from set plays we have scored since he came on board. Catching up on the thread and folk saying at start of second half how boring the game is and how turgid we are to watch - go take a flying f**k. That performance was anything but boring. Great performance and especially the never say die effort and commitment every single player showed tonight.
  21. A midfield of McGregor, McGinn and Armstrong with Christie supporting Adams. Tierney and Patterson are wing backs McTominay, Hendry and McKenna centre backs. Gordon in the sticks
  22. Cheers. The way he has emerged as an option so quickly did make me think of Rhodes. Hope - if he turns out to be decent - he is given a fair crack at playing for us. Never liked the way we managed to underutilize poachers like Rhodes and Boyd (noted that Boyd contributed largely to his underwhelming cap record). The other thing worth noting is that for a 20 year old lad, he is very sure of himself, bit of a swagger and a confidence to him. When he is in interviews and doing press stuff, he isn't some camera shy awkward kid, he has a presence about him. I like that (I think)
  23. From what I have seen from his goals, highlights and my one Bristol City game this season, I can offer this: He is a nuisance to defenders, doesn't give them a moment. Poacher type striker who won't take time in the box for extra touches or letting ball bounce. Sharp movement in the box. Good with his head and the kind of striker to thrive off good service from out wide. Not dissimilar to a prime Jordan Rhodes in a way. Confident lad.
