I feel Shinnie was overrated in his time here. When he arrived 3 years ago you could already see that he wasn't as physical as you needed to be to be in this Livi side, and he was more often than not a luxury that we couldn't afford. His best performances came this season, after the writing was already on the wall, when he tried to show more commitment and leadership, but I still don't think it was enough. No big loss IMO.

Hopefully we get the list of who's staying and going in the next couple of days. Yengi is probably the biggest, most interesting name. Hopefully he and Shamal have clauses in their contacts that mean we can make money selling them on rather than letting them walk away.

Yengi doesn’t seem like a natural finisher so I understand him being pushed wide if we play with one recognised up top, ie Anderson. It seems to me like that could be the case with Muirhead incoming. I was surprised at Yengi turning back so much yesterday. I would’ve like to have seen him take on the fullback and cross a few in. Seemed pretty ineffective out wide.

Unsurprising I suppose. A player with a great touch and a good passer but I’m unsure if he’s specialist enough to nail a role in a well-oiled team this coming season.

I’d forgotten about Omeonga. With Holt going it does leaving the question about how we fill that combative-destroyer space. At this point I think it probably needs someone more refined and composed than Brandon but he certainly has the energy and aggression for the role. I *think* Carson could be that man but would be interested to hear what others think.

edit: when/how does this thread get punted to the diddy league forum?

Holt took over from Bartley as the aggressive mid who was also cute enough to buy fouls to relieve the pressure in defence. Don't think Brandon has that in him yet, sure it was him outmuscled against Sevco where he was easily pushed off the ball and we didn't get a foul, when they scored. Holt knew how to position himself to get fouls in those situations.

You'd imagine that's what Carson has been brought in to do, the writing was on the wall late into January and it was a decent succession signing.

Apparently Shamal could be away as well, which leaves us atm with something along the lines of this:

I'm basing this on a 433, saw an interview with Sole last week where he said the reason he wanted to come was that he'd spoken to Martindale and he convinced him with the plan of playing an attacking 433 and getting wingers running at folk and crossing the ball into the box.

GK: New signing, young backup signing

RB: Finlayson (14 games at RB, 12 at CB last season for Linfield), Jamie Brandon.
CB: Finlayson, Devlin, Nottingham, Donnellan.
LB: Clarke, (Maybe Montano signs an extension?)

CM: Carson, Stephen Kelly (really hope he stays), Sangare, Pittman.

RW: Sole, Bradley, Teto
ST: Yengi (Again, really hope he stays), Korboa, Muirhead
LW: Muirhead, New signing?

It looks like we're probably going to be wanting two guys for each position and rotating from there. That leads me to believe Kelly and Tete are likely away and we're still to sign: x2 CM, x2 LW, x2 GK, x1 LB - if the budget allows. It could well end up being one guy that can play LB/LWB/LW that covers 2 positions, i.e. Montano.

From the above, absolutely wild to me that we're "in discussion" with Sean Kelly. Disappointing that we weren't told anything about Nottingham being under contract too.

The good:

Kelly and Tete look to be staying, no relegation clause. Devlin gone.

The bad:

Nottingham is staying, Kelly doesn't deserve a new deal, that under contract but up for transfer list (all of it).

Going to assume that translates to "will be away if another club wants to take them" which is disappointing. Or possibly the players he thinks we're more likely to get some kind of fee for - I was under the impression MWH wasn't bad for Dunfermline (though I never watched a lot of Championship football so might just be wrong) and was looking forward to seeing how he kicked on with us.

David Carson being signed to play about 5 minutes then being available for transfer, despite having a load of Championship experience, is the kind of pointless thing that probably sums up Martindale's "process" over the last 18 or so months quite well.

That was my thoughts with MWH as well, it seemed like he kicked on and done well at this level. Him and Brandon fighting for the RB spot would've been great depth. Sangare, I'm convinced would absolutely smash it next season at this level, the lack of quality is made up by pure physicality which he could get away with. Agreed with the point re: Carson, absolutely puzzling. Had just figured it was an 'eye on next season' signing.

Mixed feelings on the squad update

I'm very glad Brandon, Stephen Kelly and Yengi are still here. Fairly surprised at the Carson one, however given our defensive signing he may have been competing with Brandon as a CM, however I'd have kept him. I'd also have punted Nottingham, however his fitness record and 'versatility' makes him a preferred option to Devlin. Given we've signed 3 wide attackers, I'm not surprised Bradley is away - a player who hasn't really developed since joining. I expected Hamilton to stay, as George seems away however the former's fitness record has been fairly poor this season. I did like Shinnie however the recent goal against Aberdeen by their youngster, and the way he was done by a simple one-two reminded me of watching Hugo Faria and Mark Fotheringham in midfield.

If his fitness can be sorted, very happy with Montano's offer, and Sean Kelly seems like the sort of versitile player who we'll need in the Championship (just not as a CB)

I make the squad as being (if all offers transfers are made)

GK - George

Def - Kelly, Montano, Donnellan, Nottingham, Clarke, Finlayson (plus Ledingham)

Mid - Brandon, Stephen Kelly, Pittman, , Lawal

Forward - Yengi, Murhead, Sole, Korboa, Teto (for now..) (with Sharp, Culbert and Stenhouse)

Hopefully this sees us playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 rather than stockpiling CBs like last summer, with a fair bit of flexibility in the squad.

What does he see in Nottingham?

Wild. I assume he's triggered an extension and we've been stuck with him. Absolute shite.

The best part of that announcement is that his partner in crime Devlin is gone.

Byrne is a no brainer but got to imagine raith will be competing with us for that signature. If they go up they’ll get him.

From what I’ve heard on Nottingham it’s another tragic piece of bad recruitment in the same vein as Parkes, where the player had the option to extend. He clearly knows he’s that shite nobody else will give him close to the money he’s on with us.

Aye MWH done well enough and I'm really surprised you're letting him go. Played a couple of positions for us as well and looked good as a RCB in a back 3/5.

I'd absolutely love Carson though.

MWH was really solid defensively but pretty limited going forward. Can see why he never really made it in the Premiership but you could do a lot worse in the Championship.

Judging by a couple of his interviews he did while with us it's no surprise to me that he's transfer listed though. Don't think he was that enamoured with Martindale.

Quite a few in that camp, mate.

The refusal to admit Teto will never get a work permit is brilliant tbf, although I've no idea if you dropping a level makes it more likely?
