Renewal is 18 months away and I'm paying less than 2% currently so I thought stick in a fixed ISA up to my limit and give balance to wife to do same. Anyone got any better ideas or just want to hang onto it for me until I'm ready? Pm me your bank details and I’ll get your dodgy cash laundered investment sorted for you

The amount you’ll make on interest will be relatively modest compared to Mrs Arab’s desire for a new kitchen/bathroom or lifetime holiday or indeed your sudden desire for a new car. Get it dumped in the mortgage, get it out of sight and get it forgotten about.

All the pound notes stuck together.

If it were me and I did not need it for a few years I’d put it in a stocks and shares ISA and invest it in a passive fund like the UBS S&P 500.* * this does not constitute investment advice.

Get it dumped in the mortgage, get it out of sight and get it forgotten about. Reasonable call. Assuming £20k into a one year fixed ISA, that’s £1,000 in interest if you can find 5% versus saving $400 in interest if the loan is at 2%. As @alta-pete notes, “expenses” have a way of appearing when you have resources sitting around, much like expense often expands to match income.
supermik
In Lanzarote just now. Got a taxi last night for a trip that was about a mile and a half. It cost about 3 euros! Why does it cost more than that just to set foot in a taxi back in Scotland?

I went to Egypt and Israel for a couple of days from Cyprus when I was a kid on some promoted tour thing. I was too little to fully appreciate what I was seeing but I like the fact I did it so I can say I've been to Africa and Asia even though I've spent less than 24 hours in each place.

This raises an interesting discussion. How long do you have to spend somewhere to be able to say you've "been there"? For example, technically I've been to Asia several times, but only been in the transit lounges at Dubai and Singapore, so I don't really count it

It was just a day trip they went on. He was 17 and she was 12 at the time. They said that inside the pyramids was not very nice due to the smell. They were also promised a view of the sunset from a boat on the Nile, daughter said it was somewhere between skyscrapers.

I'd never say I've experienced the culture or anything mad, I'd always clarify I've only been there momentarily but it's just a good wee fact. 59 minutes ago, supermik said: It was just a day trip they went on. We just went outside the pyramids, some guy asked to take our picture and then tried to charge us after, also checked out the museum and saw the Tutankhamen mask, Israel was mad coz they had so many c***s rocking about with guns, saw the wailing wall and the place where yon Jesus was birthed and the crucifixion place. My main memory was it was far too hot like 40 degrees. 52 minutes ago, Donathan said: Cyprus is in Asia.
