That's how I learned playing football back in the 80/90s. I know what you mean, however I believe football has outgrown that or at least is in the process of it now, certainly at the top levels. Scotland may be about 5-10 years behind though. Especially with the re-emergence of the back 3 and the start of what is looking like a move away from attacking fullbacks into more "wide centre backs". For me i've always thought of that deeper midfielder as the playmaker with the one alongside, or two sitting ahead as the disruptors, either without the ball and winning it back or with the ball by pushing forward. We have though, but its been in fits and starts. You can see how we're trying to play, with a high press and energetic play, but we're still falling short due to mistakes and poor decision making.
