HibeeJibee
In fairness for all the high jinks and LOL at overclaiming, the very reason that more people in hardship can't get any help from the travel fund (or the pot of funds more generally) is because of people abusing them and overclaiming. Take advantage of it if you want, but lets remember that people who could do with the help can't because people further up the list hoover up all the cash... It has a finite budget and, because they aren't making sure people are only receiving what they need/spent, the government is setting the threshold at X, when it could really be a bit lower at Y if only they were clamping down on the 'abuse'... banterman86
Regarding the travel grant I missed the summer deadline so didn't apply for this term, will I be able to claim the money back as I must have spent around £300 on travel this term. Also, when is the deadline for claiming for next term? Grant? i was never aware of that, i always applied for a reimbursement of travel expenses for the year. I think the deadlines quite late...mibbe spring time
Zanetti
How does the travel expenses thing work and when can you claim for it?
Zanetti
1st of December. If you use buses, trains etc to get to uni then you can claim the money you spent on them back. Good times.

SaltyTON
Note, there is an excess of about £150 on the travelling expenses....
Yer Maw Has a Sac.
I'm a member of the wardening team at Pollock Halls. It's one of the best in the UK and has won awards. It's not cheap: but no uni accommodation in Edinburgh is (whatever the uni). Overall myself and most students find the Pollock experience excellent - it's good quality rooms, good quality food, excellent facilities on site, 15-20 mins walk from main Humanities site & Unions (George Square) / 25 mins from Science (Kings Buildings) / city centre 30 mins / on main bus routes, Commonwealth Pool adjacent one side + Holyrood Park/Arthurs Seat on the other.I'm in Chancellor's Court (built in 2003) which is en-suite and about ~£6,000 a year. We've got 550 rooms - and over 700 students (because some of the rooms are bunked therefore lots cheaper). It's like a decent hotel, tbh, it's used as a conference hotel in the summer and you're looking at something far plusher than a Travelodge etc. John Burnett is brand new, mostly en-suite/mostly single block of about 200 students; costs in excess of £6,000 a year. It's full of all the yahs/hooray-henrys since it's most expensive - only block site I'd recommend avoiding. At the bottom of the site is Holland House, with about 400 ensuite single rooms, costing somewhere over £5,000 a year. Masson House (~150 students) is a small block, mainly ensuite, all single... costing about £5,000 a year. There are then 5 non-ensuite, all single blocks, all of about 250 students: Ewing, Baird, Turner, Lee and Grant... I'm not well up on the costs of these but I guess you're talking around the £4,000 mark as they're not en-suite. You get free access to the Refectory (dinners 7 days a week; breakfast Mon-Fri; brunch Sat & Sun); it's eat all you like (no points cap), and the food is decent and a very wide choice. Just rebuilt over the summer so tip-top facilities. The site also has a computer lab, a shop, bar, squash courts, hall (ceilidhs etc.) and each house have their own common rooms, pantries (communal social spaces with microwave/fridge/toaster and so on). We've a music room in Chancellor's!! Your room gets cleaned once a week / bin emptied daily Mon-Fri / bed linen can be exchanged twice a week. Each house has it's own laundry for doing your clothes. The wardens are friendly ... At the bottom of the site is Fraser Court, that is self-catered flats (not en-suite per room). Costs under £3,000. Thanks for that! Can i ask what you are studying?

Not for everyone - it's calculated based on your parents' earnings. I went to all the effort of applying for it in 1st year, and they sent me a letter back saying that the whole amount was under "Parental Contribution", and that their contribution was £0.

Mushroom
anyone still not received ££ from saas yet? i've not had one payment, i'm owed well over a grand. Phone them up, I needed re-assessed and it hadn't gone through by the beginning of November despite me sending all the forms off before uni. They pushed it through and I had my backpayments a week later. Pick a time when you're not going to be particularly busy as you'll likely spend at lest 10 minutes on hold, I heard of people spending an hour on hold. The music is also a couple of piano chords followed by the beginning of a drum fill as it fades out - it is truly maddening. SaltyTON
MsC (T) History; finished MA (Hons) in History & Politics last year. Lived in Holland House in my undergrad 1st year. How can you do an MSc in History, it's not a science?

The Master
How can you do an MSc in History, it's not a science? It's a social science. Although at Dundee, History Masters degrees are MLitt (Master of Letters; there's no such thing as a post-graduate MA in the ancients).
The Master
Info on Abertay Uni please?? Would be much appreciated. thank you. Former polytechnic, granted university status in 1992. Excellent for computer games. For courses that are done at other universities, Abertay (and other 1992 places) is probably best suited to those who don't quite make the grade for the bigger places (IMHO). If you have the grades, and elsewhere does what you want...go elsewhere. EDIT: hold on, haven't we already given you answers about this? The Master
Someone once described to me the universities in Scotland in the metaphor of the Scottish Leagues - as follows...SPL: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen (top six); St Andrews, Dundee, Stirling (bottom six) Was it a Maths student?
The Master
I said "metaphor" tbf. I know, I know... BTW, your input is needed on the 3rd Division board about the "punishment" given to a certain club...
renton
Someone once described to me the universities in Scotland in the metaphor of the Scottish Leagues - as follows...SPL: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen (top six); St Andrews, Dundee, Stirling (bottom six) First Division: Heriot-Watt, Robert Gordon, Strathclyde Second Division: Paisley, Glasgow Caledonian, Napier Third Division: Abertay, Queen Margaret, UHI I'd be bit dubious about some (top six v bottom six especially; and Paisley and Napier above QMU) but at heart OK. Depends, as always on the course your doing. Abertay, as previously mentioned will kick the arse over anyone else in computer game design. Also, for the limited syllabus that HW offers, we have a very good engineering department at least on a par with Edinburgh - if not better in some select areas, such as our high voltage lab, our MEMS clean room and our extensive laser facilities. In actual fact you can make the same case for Stathclyde as well. Edited November 20, 2009 by renton
Zanetti
Got 61% for my first politics essay. No complaints from me considering I've never done the subject before.
