If you tell people you don't like lots of attention, then they will assume you are deliberately drawing attention to yourself and need cheered up. If you don't tell people at all, and a couple of them find out, then everyone will assume you are being miserable, and will make extra effort to cheer you up. When someone said it today, I just replied "Cheers" and waited for the next person to come across. I don't mind it all that much, I just don't like it when people who I rarely speak to walk/jump/skip over to us and say it, to then go away. I'd be up for a conversation, but not you saying two words, and then leaving again. Which then leads on to someone over hearing, and asking "Oh, is it your birthday?!" Aye, it's my fucking birthday.
