jaggyness
Porte apparently ill? Shipped 51 secs in the prologue, to his team mate. Zacharin has crashed & back at medical car for a good while. He missed the team presentation through illness but the point remains, that dropping significant time on direct rivals after stage one isn't good news. Particularly if he is still feeling the effects of illness by Tuesday with the first summit finish
kiddy
Obviously Porte thinks he can ride it off & still remain in contention, before the racing gets serious.
kiddy
Few top names reported out the back today, Nibali, Porte, Gorka Izzaguire & Sagan. Edited August 26, 2018 by kiddy
kiddy
Valverde takes the stage, beating Kwiatowski at the line. The pole goes into red.
jaggyness
Now doubting we'll ever see porte win a grand tour although I didn't think Thomas would win one either

Can't see him taking to the start tomorrow if he's that ill?

kiddy
Cavendish season over, as he's still suffering Epstein-Barr virus. First diagnosed back in April 2017.

Could it be career-threatening? He should have recovered by now. The virus, together with the crashes, explains his awful form in the TdF. Kittel thinks that he may have health problems and has also pulled out of the Tour of Britain. His form has been poor this season and it could be a similar problem to Cavendish's. -
kiddy
With Cav being 33, I can see him retiring. Too many young guns coming through & it's 2/3 years since he showed World Tour form. Sent from my XT1039 using Tapatalk

He desperately wants to break Merckx's record of TdF wins. However, I doubt that Dimension Data can provide him with the necessary leadout train. Deloitte's are contributing to his current DD deal so he may need their continued support with a new team. -
kiddy
Big split in the peleton today, caused by a crash into road furniture about 10k from the finish. Allied to cross winds, Kelderman & Pinot being 2 who dropped 1.45 on GC.

F_T_Y
Jesus herrada from cofidis got himself in the break and ends up with the red jersey and a handy lead of around 3 minutes. Could we have a surprise winner? Two mountain stages coming up, the breakaways have had their fun so far but we might see some GC battles this weekend.
Salvo Montalbano
Probably a good enough move by Michelson Scott - no need to go deep before mountains, no need for Yates to fanny about with the media etc but forces Movistar into being more proactive. Could still see almost anyone in the top 15 or 20 winning it. All it takes is a tough day with one of them having good legs and the Vuelta is very back-loaded in terms of climbing.

F_T_Y
Great racing today, quintana just won't attack anyone! lucky valverde managed to get back in and do some work or he would have lost more time on yates.
