Gordon Waddell: Farewell and thanks to Neil Lennon, but now who's next?

GORDON looks at the manager's departure and says that there will be no time for Celtic to sit back and dwell on the memories.

"Who, of the calibre Celtic fans think they deserve, would want to inherit a situation that Neil Lennon clearly no longer believed was acceptable?"

FAREWELL then, Neil. Thanks for the memories. Now who?

That’s football, right? Out with the ex guy and come on with the next guy.

Sure, there’ll be eulogies, stats, analysis, factfiles - memory lane will be the busiest street in town for days to come.

Ultimately, though, if you’re a Celtic fan, all that matters is tomorrow, not yesterday.

And if you’re Peter Lawwell, all that should matter is finding a manager who can manage, not one that’s going to put bums on seats.

In which case, they should ALL be grateful Henrik Larsson has officially ruled himself out of the process.

The last thing they need right now is the kind of unfounded idolatry he’d bring to the dugout at such a critical time in their lifespan. He may have put 10,000 more bums on seats but there’s not a single shred of evidence to suggest he’d be good for them in any other way.

The thing is, who DO you go for?

Maybe more to the point, who would take it?

Not that Celtic aren’t a massive club. Not that there won’t be a queue down Kerrydale Street clutching their CVs. What’s not to love? You’re pretty much guaranteed a league title in your first season, probably your second too.

But who, of the calibre Celtic fans think they deserve, would want to inherit a situation that Neil Lennon clearly no longer believed was acceptable?

Which of them would do it for a wage which would probably rank the Hoops right in the middle of the English Championship in terms of payers?

And how many of them would be prepared to put up with the kind of scrutiny they’d never get in a million years, even at clubs in the top six in England?

The obvious names have been trotted out - Davie Moyes, Malky Mackay, Owen Coyle, Stevie Clarke, Jackie McNamara, Paul Lambert.

Of those, I’d give it to Mackay in a heartbeat if I was Lawwell - and I thought he’d be prepared to take it. But it’d be a bigger surprise if he didn’t pitch up somewhere in England.

And that’ll be his problem unless he’s prepared to pay seriously big bucks to offset the resistance he'll meet because managing in Scotland offers little in the way of interest to those who have already operated beyond it.

Especially if he’s not providing a team and a budget which all but guarantees them getting through their three qualifiers and into the group stages of the Champions League.

Over to you then, Peter. No pressure, eh?

Super Larsson or Super Ally?

Brora Rangers 1-1 The Rangers

Pretty embarrassing stuff from Rangers, they've really let down their home town of Brora.

Losing a cup final against 9 players is embarrassing never mind a pre-season friendly. :)

First half was poor but to be fair the team was made up mostly of players who won't be in the first team next season. When Rangers had what will be very close to their first team on for the 2nd half it was all one way traffic and Brora were lucky not to lose the match.

Zaliukas and McGregor worked well at centre back, especially as it was their first game together. I wouldn't be surprised if our first team defence next season was Wallace, McGregor, Zaliukas and Foster.

Did Hearts not beat Dynamo Bucharest 2-1 away recently? Youse managed a draw with Brora. Id imagine that Hearts, and probably Hibs are shitting themselves the now.
