qos_75
We are hoping to go to the States next year in August or September and having visited New York, Vegas and San Francisco last year we are going to go back to Vegas and take in another city or two. I fancy Miami, although I don't think this will be the best time of year to go due to the potential for hurricanes. That said, we have looked at Chicago and the likes of Houston and San Diego too, however we are undecided. So, I would grateful if you can recommend another good US city to visit for three or four days.
Newbornbairn
Savannah, Georgia. Went there a few years ago and totally fell in love with the place and the people. Sadly, getting back hasn't been so easy.
Swampy
Chicago would be my bet. My wife and I were there for three nights in August and it was wonderful. Plus it's not too hot (or at least wasn't this year) for August. Houston's a good place for a three-night break - there's some lame rivalry between Dallas and Houston, but I don't buy into it. I recommend Houston one day, for sure. It has some great museums and parks, and some fine restaurants. But don't do it this time, because even September is awful. I can't emphasise this enough: do not go in the summer under any circumstances. Just don't. The heat may not always be above 100 but the humidity is absolutely unbearable. I live in Dallas, and I try only to go to Houston in the winter, and even then it can be quite muggy, believe it or not. Dallas isn't quite as humid in summer but while I do recommend Dallas for visitors, once again, don't go in summer. Ditto Austin. Seattle is a superb city, and wonderful weather in August, but it's a hell of a long flight and as such not really worth it for anything less than five nights, I'd say. I've been to plenty of other cities, so if you have anywhere else in mind speak up and I'll offer my thoughts, but I'm not going to name them all So, barring that... yeah, Chicago's my recommendation. It's just brilliant. I actually prefer it to NYC. edit: I'm only going off places I've been to, hence I don't mention Miami or San Diego. Quite easily my second favourite city I've ever been to.
Swampy
Madrid's still my favourite city but Chicago's right up there.

oregonbud
if your going to vegas then you will be close to the west coast and it would,t be so hard to see seattle, cut over to the coast, hire a car drive up highway 101 and enjoy the views,go through portland and fly back to amsterdam from seattle, its only a ten hour flight.
Boghead ranter
Echo previous mentions for Seattle, brilliant city. Santa Monica also worth a visit if you're looking to incorporate some chilling time into your trip.
Latino Lover
Washington has quite a bit to do for a few days, Boston is great too. I liked Miami much more than I expected and can't comment on Chicago, Seattle or Texan cities. Hire a car and go to the grand canyon skywalk via the Hoover dam if you haven't already when in Vegas if time allows. Will take best part of a day but is well worth it and much better than just flying over.

Hedgecutter
Referring to Swampy's Seattle suggestion, you can combine it with a trip to Vancouver which isn't too far away. I know that's Canada, but still well worth a trip. Worked in Seattle for a summer whilst at uni and thought it was fantastic.
WILLIEA
Would endorse the Seattle/Vancouver combo. Both great cities and you can take a trip up the Cascades to where Twin Peaks was filmed.
MattBairn
I went to Chicago with my wife a few years ago. Best holiday I've ever had. Awesome city.
L. Brilliant
Would endorse the Seattle/Vancouver combo. The northwest is nice place to drive - I intend to go back in the next couple of years and I'll definitely be visiting twin Peaks territory next time.. My own recommendations - while not disagreeing with Chicago - would be Atlanta GA and Austin TX. Avoid: Detroit, Birmingham, and Minneapolis/St. Paul and other nothingy midwest cities like Madison etc. DC offers little; Philapdelphia might be all right but I never saw enough to recommend it.

deky
Pittsburgh. Never been but always fancied going. Pop in while you're over there and let me know if it's worth a visit, cheers.
The Old Northerner
I found both Boston and Philadelphia to be interesting and fun - having a historical inclination will have helped
K.T
I would also agree with the Seattle/ Vancouver suggestions. Both great places! Austin, Texas and San Antonio are also good cities. However, my favourite place has to be New Orleans. I've only spent a couple of drunken days there though in the French quarter so I'm not too sure how good it would be for anything but partying. Avoid Denver, Salt Lake City and Albuquerque at all costs. Detroit as well, absolute shit hole!

Never been to Birmingham, but I had a good time in both Detroit and MSP. Granted after three days you're going to get itchy feet. I wouldn't make a long holiday out of either.
