Sons' sorrow

Fair enough, I'd omitted McGinn from my thoughts on that, but I'd only said Saunders was as dependable a full-back as we've had since Brittain. And in his short time with us, Saunders has been very solid. McGinn was class though, that's certainly true.

Saunders the best full back we've had since Craig Brittain? I seem to remember a certain Paul McGinn in the not too dim and distant!

Andy Geggan, Nicky Devlin and Ryan Finnie were all really good fullbacks as well.

It's a real shame that Finnie seemed more intent on living the footballers lifestyle than actually being a footballer. He looked like he could be a tremendous player, pretty sure he was only 16/17 when he played for us in the playoff final.

Is he at Berwick or something now?

Fair enough, guys. I concede, we have had a number of cracking full-backs over the last 10 years or so. It would be tough to single one out as being the best, so I'll retract my doing so with Saunders.

I do think Saunders is pretty solid overall though. Granted I wasn't at the Raith game, but away at Hibs I don't think Saunders was bad at all. Nobody was great, but I certainly wouldn't single out Saunders for criticism.

He was fantastic in our promotion season and as you say, he looked like he could be a real player.

I can't say I know what his attitude was like, but something must have gone awry somewhere if he's now in the bottom tier having been so impressive for us and Accies wanting him back after that.

Has he suffered with injuries along the way maybe?

Got to say that I don't think Saunders is all that great at right back. If we were to keep him on for cover there and at centre back then fair enough but he's really not impressed me. Positionally he can be all over the place at times and doesn't stop enough crosses for my liking. I fully expect Taggart to come straight back in when he's fit.

Unsure. Last I'd heard he was at Thistle. A supremely talented player. Hopefully he can make a go of it.

Had a quick Google and according to Soccerbase he's at Annan. Definitely would not be averse to bringing him back to the club at some point, doubt he'd be on a huge wage either.

Along with Nicky Devlin I think Ryan Finnie is the most gifted natural modern fullback I've ever seen step into a first team at age 16. Both appeared for us as 16 year olds and both immediately stood out as ones to watch.

It's good to see Nicky finally settled and doing very well from himself at Ayr. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bigger club pick him up soon, especially if Ayr get promotion.

Yeah. He certainly wasn't the same player when he came back to us for the second time, but it's good to see him doing well now. He was a cracking right-back and I'm sure he could play at a higher level.

I think it took him a very long time to recover from that serious injury he picked up when he joined Motherwell. It's a real shame because I reckon he had the ability (and fearless attitude) to challenge for a first team spot at Motherwell even at such an early age.

Judging by what I've seen and heard of him at Ayr he's back to his old self - and he's even added goals to his game! Great to see as he's one of all too few excellent players who have came through our youths.

He signed for Annan a couple of months ago. Not sure how much he has played though. He did some of pre-season with us.

Finnie was decent enough but he's a bit of a footballer clone roaster type character. More interested in cryptic emotional tweets, cloud and angel tattoos, trips to Ocean Beach Club (VIP obv) and #newwheels than he is in actually holding down a 1st team place somewhere.

The scrapheap awaits.

You must know more about him than I do. I can't profess to know anything about what you've said above, but he certainly had lots of ability when he was with us, and I think could have played at a very good level. It would be a shame if it's been his attitude which has prevented him from doing so.

If you have a look at his Twitter you'll see what BBPF means. His Twitter game is up there with Greig 'Nandos Baller #Zing' Spence.
