There’s been little cloud these last few nights and I’ve found myself staring up at the stars while walking the dog.  Got one of those sky tracker apps that tells you what you are looking at.  Turns out that big red thing wasn’t mars after all.

Next step is a telescope.  Watched a few videos and one that is recommended is the size of an artillery gun.  I want one that I can bung in a wardrobe when not in use that will give me a decent view of the night skies.

Can I recommend something like a 4" Newtonian Reflector as a starter scope. Easy to handle and you can put it away in a cupboard. It'll give you a start at a reasonable price with a good magnification to see Saturn, Mars and Jupiter is reasonably good definition. Something like this would be a good starter https://amscope.co.uk/products/iqcrew-35x-350x-76mm-reflector-telescope-with-adjustable-tripod-stand?variant=39900988637249&currency=GBP&gclid=Cj0KCQiAnNacBhDvARIsABnDa6-dvvd6UOcG2j-C-_bgz_spC5o8VdbI6-v7rZ6qxHC3Jkztg9rvi2oaArr6EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds although it's a bit smaller at 3"

PS Don't think that the Barlow lens will give you extra magnification , it won't it just means it's a bigger image but no extra detail, you'll need a bigger scope for that.

Anyway get one it's fantastic looking at the night sky.

If I ever move to somewhere with a good view of the night sky I might invest in one of these. Pricey but you don't have to know anything to operate it and find stuff, and the image quality is said to better than much bigger ones.

I’d love one of those but as you say they are a bit pricey, I’m currently looking at a “smart “ scope possibly a Cassegrain type ,something like this https://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/celestron-starsense-explorer-dx-5-inch-sct

Slightly cheaper version, but your one looks more sensible. Being as in Scotland you either have to be out freezing in winter or in the middle of the night in Summer, you might not be using it that much after the initial excitement.

I know what you are saying 👍 you need to see more and more. I’m at the point where “do I need more or I’m I happy with what I have?” It’s a difficult question, for me it’s how much can I spend before the better half catches on 😂😂

Not sure if this belongs here but this is an enormous breakthrough for humanity and will surely have massive long-term benefits in terms of space travel and exploration.

A step in the road certainly, next big hurdle will be managing to repeat what they've done 10 times a second. After that will be getting it small and stable enough for a space ship, or at least the component parts for assembly in orbit or on the Moon.

  • 4 weeks later...

I gots me a telescope.  Tomorrow I’ll have me a Barlow lens that I should have bloody bought with it.  Next step is some decent eyepieces.  Those eyepieces will go great with it and the 10 inch dobsonian that will just suddenly appear in march/April.

[Cornish accent] "Newquay... we have a problem".

For now the last satellite launch by British rocket remains Prospero way back in 1971, when they'd probably less computing power than 747 pilot's watch now.

We'll be popular in Muscat tonight:     Aman is Oman’s first ever satellite mission. It will take pictures of the Earth's surface.
