The design for the CERN Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland that is used for nuclear research was based on the design for the Glasgow Underground.

For several months scientists from around the world would visit Glasgow and travel on the underground to gain an understanding of how the collider would work.

That sounds plausible as there is no other explanation for people wanting to visit Glasgow.

In the game show 15 to 1 the 15 wasn't actually set in stone. The shows producer asked a member of the audience to randomly pick a number from a hat and every week an audience member chose 15.

Erinsburgh, the fictional town where the tv soap neighbours is set, is so called because the person who came up with the idea was an scotsman from the town of Helensburgh.

Wife loves Neighbours. Just told her that wonderful “fact”. She’s bought it hook line and sinker and will no doubt spread that round her friends.

FYI there is a place south of Sydney called Helensburgh but the stupid locals pronounce it Helensburg.

In 1861 in Tupelo, Wyoming, Willard ‘Bones’ Millard (pictured) was dug out of the cemetery and installed as Mayor to resolve a bitter dispute between two rival factions. He was subsequently re-elected twice and made an unsuccessful run for Congress. Contemporary accounts describe him as “charismatic” and “even-handed”.

I used the Underground a lot in the early 1970's.

Does CERN have a dark, musty smell in it's depths, and the smell of vomit on the stairs ?

The 1958 Cowal Games in Dunoon were held during an unusually hot sunny day. A piper from the Renton Pipe Band keeled over having suffered from heatstroke while playing Johnny Cope.. This was where the expression piping hot came from.

One day the TV scheduler indicated that he wanted a show that started at 12:45 and asked for ideas.

Somebody thought this was a strange time to start a show and wrote back "Fifteen to One ?"

The rest is history.
