The All New Occasionally Aussie P+B Quiz League and ☕ Occasional Cup ☕

Recommended Posts

That was brutal. 6/10. Far too many Aussie-specific questions, all four of which I got wrong.

Rather bizarrely, Druk Yul came up in a pub quiz I did tonight.

Semi-educated guess (which are the only kind I can land ATM) on Donatello. Knew the other 4.

Miss the Guardian quiz. Shame The Times daily quiz is behind a paywall.

Maybe someone with access could copy and paste the Times quiz on here?

Does this link work? Should add that I have access to The Times through subscription to The Australian although am sure it was supposed to have expired over a year ago. The quiz isn't interactive though.

Yeah, if you call winning £166.66 (a sixth share of a grand) on Eggheads and the occasional bottle of wine or case of beer in a pub quiz 'professional', I guess.

Been a while since I watched it, but aren't there only 5 to a team? Did you bribe one of the Eggheads to let you win?

Six to a team, including reserve. Five appear on the show. Would be a bit unfair to cut the player who hung around all day and didn't get on the show out of a share.

Know a few of the Eggheads fairly well - all are of unimpeachable character, CJ excluded. Mind you, you wouldn't need to bribe him to beat him, he's just not that good.

The reserve explains it.

As for CJ, if it came to it you could just offer him an alibi.

Yeah, that works for me cheers.

Only got four despite the advantage of being a Brummie for one of them.

Right. Updated the league, this time in Google Sheets (sounds like a brand of toilet paper). Looks okay except the shading is a bit fecked up. But I can't be arsed spending my "unemployment" figuring it out ... I've got bottles of cider to drink in the park and passers-by to shout at. Good to see a newbie up at the top.

@Marr1 ... if you fancy taking the quizzes from Mon-Wed, you can join our league. Don't be disheartened by your low score today, four Aussie questions is the exception rather than the norm.

Re: the Times quiz. I can access it and got a paltry 5 - hadn't even heard of half of the questions / answers. I think an interactive multiple choice quiz is best for this league, if only we could find a reliable and decent one we could use! (Not that I don't like the Aussie one, but 4 Aussie-related questions in one day is beyond the pale!)

First day of Summer edition and a pleasing 7/10 as thought it would be much less as only knew 3 (celebrity (Oz style), triangle & Milk. Guessed AFL, novel, PM & cricket). After no Aussie questions yesterday there are 4 to welcome in our summer. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/mind-games/quiz?quizId=5663&sectionId=1

5/10, knew 1 (triangle), guessometer in overdrive.

That's the beauty of English...how six very common words can be quickly combined to make a phrase no one has ever heard before ;)

Yeah, The Times quiz is tough. Got 7/15 today, which is the best I've done for a while. I'm normally in the 4-6 range. It's set by Olav Bjortomt, who is a former World Quiz Champion, and it's meant to be difficult. I don't really mind that, as I always learn one or two new things from it that might be useful further down the line, and while tending towards the obscure at times, there are always a few nuggets of interest in there. I acknowledge it is pitched at the 'serious quizzer' though.

My issue with the Aussie quiz is that, given a relatively limited amount of time in each day to devote to quizzing, there is a hard limit to the number of 'so what?' questions that I can justify giving attention to. I know little or nothing about the Australian sports franchises Cronulla Sharks or Collingwood Magpies, but don't really consider this to be a gap in my knowledge worth addressing. Being bombarded with half a dozen questions every week in which one of the options is either Cronulla Sharks or Collingwood Magpies seems like overkill.

Agree that multiple choice quizzes are the best format for this though.
