This is probably fair, although that doesn’t stop him being a semi-literate halfwit who is absolutely in his element encouraging Michael Stewart to yell for twenty minutes at Willie Miller about Borna Barasic’s transfer value in the middle of reading out the Motherwell team sheet.

But that is the strategy now. A moderate programme that covers the football accurately and thoroughly does not generate social media hits and stories.

The old firm, controversy, referees, pundits arguing is all much more valuable to them. Who cares if it’s all completely contrived like talksport!

The bbc in general has headed this way for a while as other forms of media are bullying them into it.

It's an editorial decision to be even more Celtic/Sevco focused, not McIntyre's, although I doubt he's displeased with such a direction. If you replace him little will change.

A bit chicken and egg. The appointment of MacIntryre would suggest you're correct - because management would know what they're getting from him.

But is the programme more or less OF focused when Gordon and/or Lamont present it?

Just seems Macintyre is obsessed with the Rangers, which is why I rarely listen.

I think you're dead right, but I wish they worked harder at resisting the pressure they face.

It's true, and also utterly annoying because the whole point of the BBC is they have a revenue source other than advertising. They shouldn't have to be chasing ratings. But of course that's the world we live in, where the bottom line is all that matters.

No harm to Glasgow City's goalkeeper but I have no interest in listening to her choice of music. Is this a regular thing now that someone gets to pick music to play on Sportsound? Just when i thought things couldn't get worse from the fans phone in.

I turned off at this point. I see no issue with this sort of stuff on lazy Sundays or during the week where there is usually just the one game but wtf are they trying to crow bar it in after a load of matches on a Saturday, horrific scheduling really.

There's a vast amount of BBC Radio stations which cater to music and specialise in providing it.

I have no interest in it in a sports programme.

My main theory about why they've included it is that they've tried to learn lessons from Off The Ball, but that itself has stopped being relevant for many a year and I avoid listening to it because of the music too.

A sports programme which is having to fill time with music is one which is failing in its stated purpose. We're listening because of our intrigue in the game, I'm turning off because of the music.

I'm aware I say this every month in a middle aged man shouts at cloud mouth-froth but it sticks in my craw.

I quite like it on Off the Ball on a Sunday, as it's only loosely a football show and they often talk about music among other things. But on their Saturday football show when we want to hear comment on the games it's pretty unnecessary.

With only three (Premiership) games to cover today it really laid bare just how contrived this programme is nowadays.

First 30 minutes are about Rangers and their new signings. Then we hear from Michael. Then Tom English (a stupid person's idea of a smart person) and Michael Stewart (a smart person's idea of a stupid person) have their pretend misunderstanding about Hearts which morphs into an argument. I think the Ross County/Saint Johnstone game got a mention, I'm not sure if that was before it started or not.

Then when it hits 3pm we go around the Championship games and they're introduced by their reporters. Then they're back to talking about Rangers and, ironically, how all of their new forwards look the same kind of player.

I know why it's all about the Old Firm. I don't know how else everyone here listens to Sportsound, but I use the live page on the BBC website (itself actually impossible to find directly from the Football homepage at 2:10pm) which also tells you how many people are viewing the page at any one time. The numbers all throughout today's game were only in the thousands. The audience figures for this aren't large enough to warrant them covering anything but the most popular topics and, sadly, that's Celtic and Rangers. That's not how a publicly funded broadcaster should work, but presumably it's what they have to do with the budget they have.

The post-mortem on the Sevco - Livi game was excruciating: Leanne, Tom the Leprachaun and Rory Loyal examining the *** performance from every possible angle and not addressing Livi at all, while nearby KMac was dribbling saliva everywhere.

I used to love listening to sportsound on the way to the game. It was a ritual.  Genuinely,  why bother now? They're all idiots.  I haven't listened for a long time and I have less road rage. Richard Gordon I would have listened to, no problem.  Even then, him trying to have a conversation with "Biscuits" etc? Just don't listen anymore.  It's not going to get any better.
