I might be wrong but I think the official statement from the referee was the 1st person in contact with the ball has to be no closer to the goal than the last defender and the rule only exists for a corner. That offside was because the attacker who received the ball was ahead of it before it was played, even though it was played backwards (he ran backwards past the player who made the pass).
