ForzaDundee
Nicola could step in as a great leader now. Humza could be deputy. That would bring the party firmly left-wing. Salmond will still be a political heavyweight (not cause he's fat) so will always be an asset for the SNP.
Alert Mongoose
Hosie or Sturgeon......please.....please.....please Were you stamping your feet as you typed that. What an odius cretin you really are.
Crùbag
Sad, he's head and shoulders above any other politcian we have in Scotland or at UK level. Ironically, polls have consistently shown a no-vote but a subsequent SNP win at Holyrood. His approval rating is way higher than any other party leader. All the best Eck. AeroZeppelin
Salmond is probably the greatest aScot of all time. Sad but right decision. Spend some time with his old wife.
Kyle
I'm not a fan of his, but he's a huge character. Sturgeon is the natural successor IMO. She's a rallying point for the Nationalists and Yes.
hoopy1967
Gutted he's leaving but I think Sturgeon could do a good job now
Michael W
I can't stand him but he's preferable to Sturgeon, who will inevitably take over. Don't think you can argue that he hasn't had a huge impact not just on Scottish politics, but British politics as a whole.

BerwickMad
BS you just practice a different type of nationalism, yours stops at Dover. It doesn't at all. You don't know me so can't claim to tell me what I believe.
ForzaDundee
SNP need to push on in future and capitalise on the dimise of Labour in working class areas. This means it needs to focus on the west coast vote and continue its momentum in places like Glasgow and Inverclyde. A weegie at the helm would help this. renton
Had to go, the referndum failure would've hung around his neck for the rest of the Holyrood term, it's hard to see him geting re-elected in 2016 with that failure there, that ambition thwarted. Sturgeon will get the job and I doubt anyone will run against her as anything other than a formality to process. Also means that sturgeon is not bound by Salmond's promise to not hold another referendum. Sturgeon, Lamont and Davidson, there's a tryptich for you. ICTJohnboy
Very sad. The SNP went backwards last time he quit as leader. I suspect the same will happen again.
