Which begs the question: Which kitchen utensils would be most effective at repelling attack by crocodile, snake or jobby?

Absolutely no need.

Just get yourself a Mongoose.

Everybody knows that.

Getting where ? Unable to sleep cos it's still light at 11pm and light again at 4am ? Not for me, Clive.

Away from 16 hours darkness at least. Horses for courses like most things in life. If firmly a summer person.

Anyone slightly bemused by the fact that the Faroes and Norway just took a Cat 3 hurricane at the back end of January?

That seems like a lot of energy in the system, that far north, at this time of year.  I thought hurricane systems were driven by warming in tropical waters in the summer.

Was it the media that were referring to a hurricane?they've been known to be somewhat slapdash with their reporting

It’s about terminology. Journalism is often lazy.

These storms likely had “hurricane-force” winds (of at least 74 mph). I’m not even going to bother checking as they may not have got that right.

As part of my Advanced Meteorology Course back in the early 90s I studied tropical cyclones as part of my research examination topic. I still have the bound booklet we had each had to produce. It really was a highly interesting topic.

On my course were two “students” who went on to work at the BBC. John Hammond and Helen Young.

I knew John fairly well for a number of years. Good guy.

I swore too much on my screen test. 😂

Sustained wind speeds reported on the Norwegian coast of 122 mph, that's a CAT 3 on the hurricane scale.

Hurricane’s require 79+F waters, so they WERE lazy bast**ds. Should have been referred to as a bomb cyclone.

(Interestingly, Apple attempted to autocorrect that to Bone Cyclone, which sounds like a fetish porn video).

There is a lot more to the formation of tropical cyclones (besides water temperature) than I could be arsed writing about this morning (or this evening for that matter.

I did say they were likely to be reporting on “hurricane force” winds.

Class me as a lazy b*****d too by all means.

Back when I was researching this for my practical examination there was no internet available.

I was working at the Met Office when this happened:

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/weather/case-studies/great-storm

Had a few drinks in company of Mike Fish. Our HQ bar was called the Isobar. Good times.

“Technically, Michael Fish was right: the great storm was not a hurricane, but an extratropical cyclone. Hurricanes are driven by warmer water in the sea below, while storms like this one are driven by conditions in the upper atmosphere. However, hurricane-strength winds were experienced, with a high speed of 115mph measured in Shoreham, West Sussex, and 94mph gusts in London between 3am and 4am.”

https://amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/oct/11/michael-fish-would-not-dismiss-great-storm-of-1987-today-says-met-office

The developments in data collection, recording, storage and super computing technology were unbelievably important in the decade I worked there.

I was simply agreeing with the observation. No problems with hurricane force winds, that’s fine and accurate. Your post was fine, as was the complaint about lazy TV b*****ds.
