Clarkston5
The liberal left's dominant bullying of free speech has gone on now since the 60's but recently it's gathered pace. It seems that "engagement" means agreement with every trivial issue that they force on people. The EU's human rights ethos is good in principle but in reality it means we have to pay for and agree to things we were never consulted about. Also the lie about climate change which is largely unquestioned and unchallenged which we have to pay for. Thoughts....

ScotlandGer
I mind a few years ago the fashionable phrase in UK politics was 'the search for consensus'. It seemed to get re-cycled post-referendum primarily as a means, in my opinion, to attempt to close down further debate. No sooner had Labour / Tories made such an appeal than we see the SNP membership figures shoot through the roof, Labour polling nose-dive, and 'The Vow' begin to drip into a bit of a mess. It's pretty funny watching exasperated Labour/Tory unionist politicians going round trying to desperately remind people of the No vote while appealing for 'consensus' on a 'further devolution' fudge. If right-wing conservatism feels under siege after the referendum, then, ho-hum -- them's the breaks. Surely, such right-wingers are not asking for special privilege in the free-market of the political market-place?
Clarkston5
Yes voters are thick. The thread was actually about the leftist liberalism that's infected UK and EU political spheres in particular although Obama's attempts at obtaining a socialist state appear to have failed in the States. That said the minority issues/climate change rubbish will drone on. The eradication of free speech should be a concern though. Think of how easily lefties are offended and how vicious they truly are if you say or worse still.....commit a "thought crime"

Fotbawmad
Here is a couple of quotes which encompass my general criticisms of liberals This is why I have a problem with liberals, this whole notion of respect of beliefs. People can be respected, not beliefs and even people only when they deserve it. Respecting beliefs is a form of censorship and also very disrespectful towards religious people. It's the attitude of feelings before facts. Criticizing religion could hurt the feelings of religious people and that is somehow more important than confronting them with the facts about their beliefs. It's so condescending, treating people like children by pretending Santa Claus exists. Post modernist bullshit. Same arguments since the 19th century.. “Socialism, like the ancient ideas from which it springs, confuses the distinction between government and society. As a result of this, every time we object to a thing being done by government, the socialists conclude that we object to its being done at all. We disapprove of state education. Then the socialists say that we are opposed to any education. We object to a state religion. Then the socialists say that we want no religion at all. We object to a state-enforced equality. Then they say that we are against equality. And so on, and so on. It is as if the socialists were to accuse us of not wanting persons to eat because we do not want the state to raise grain." - Frederic Batsiat

Clarkston5
Ban the troll. These trolls really are making the politics forum close to uninhabitable. Shame. Two of the most tedious spammers on this forum. They never engage but drone the same tedious "ban this troll" or "I can't use this forum" BS. It reflects the fact that they are largely ignored which I will do from now on. However their right to post should continue imo
