Paul McStay

Club: Celtic

Nationality: Scottish (76 caps / 9 goals)

Position: Centre Midfield

Paul McStay played for his one and only club Celtic from 1981 until he retired in 1997. He was club captain from 1990 and won three league titles, four Scottish Cups and one League Cup with the hoops making him a legend with the Parkhead faithful. He made his debut against a very strong Aberdeen side in 1982 and made an instant impact cutting through the defence and scoring past Jim Leighton. He scored in his Old Firm debut too, making him a firm favourite with the fans.

I remember McStay to be a good tackling midfielder who never scored much but when he did, they were excellent goal mainly from long range.

He wasn't the paciest of players though, but he made up for this in other ways; he was an excellent passer of the ball who had great vision for a link up of a one - two, or a through ball which allowed him to control the tempo of games as well.

Although he played for Celtic his entire career, he was linked with moves away in the early 90's which dominated the back pages of the papers but he soon signed a new contract and played on until 1997.

He now lives abroad but recently came back to Scotland to play in a charity match at Parkhead last September.

In a Scotland shirt he made 76 appearances and scored 9 goals. He scored his first (of two goals)in a dark blue shirt against Iceland (see below). McStay was part of the first Scotland side to qualify for the European Championships in 1992 and scored his last goal against the then Commonwealth of Independent States.

Overall he made 515 appearances for Celtic and scored 56 goals. He won young player of the year in 1983 and Player of the year (Players and Football Writers) in 1988.

He was inducted into the SFA Hall of Fame in 2010.

Great player V

Paul McStay never played in the SPL.

True. However he did get enough votes and I was a bit ambiguous with the top flight so let him pass. Besides he was only a year out.

I knew you could count - Kincardine obviously struggles with numbers.

Insert "team he supports"-related joke here.

Mea culpa. I round 53.5 titles up to 54. Bang to rights, china.

However, the 4th out of 20 is de facto the 19th? Not even Babbage could compute that!

Claudio Caniggia

Clubs: Dundee, Rangers

Position: Striker

Nationality: Argentina (50 caps / 16 goals)

_61617793_caniggia.jpg

Dundee FC is famous for many things. They brought us pictures of Jambos crying, Arabs laughing and a Heads Gone Thread. None can be more so than bringin Claudio Caniggia to Scotland.

He joined Dundee after a long career in his native Argentina and with Italian clubs Roma and Atalanta. He also played in Italia 90 alongside Maradonna and I always remember him for his goal against Brazil in the second round.

Anyway onto Dundee business. He joined the Dees in 2000 and scored 7 goals in 21 appearances for the dark blues. For the benefit of The Kincardine that's once every three games!!!!! Here's one from the benefit of the St Mirren relegation thread which is full of Dees right now.

In 2001 he joined Rangers and won the league, cup and league cup. Perhaps the highlight of his Rangers career is the trophies won section on Wikipedia. Have a wee look yourselves.

Russell Anderson is a legend among Aberdeen fans. He joined the club in 1996 and made his debut against Dunfermline the following January. Known to be a solid and reliable centre half, Russell showed loyalty to his hometown team and made it to captain in 20013. He stayed with the Dons up until Roy Keane's Sunderland put in a bit of £1m for his services in 2007.

Never been one to shy away from a tackle either (see below).

Never a goalscorer, he has managed the rare goal every so often and most recently against Motherwell alst season earning a 2-2 draw. (Go to 4:54)

He returned to Aberdeen in January 2012 and quickly settled back into a team which won the Scottish League Cup in 2014. Club legend Willie Miller compared Russell Anderson's partnership with Mark Reynolds:

Asked if they are the best since Miller and McLeish, he [Miller] said: “Yes, I think that could be the case. Anderson has been there before, then got his move and came back again at probably the tail-end of his career with all the experience in the world.'

Russell Anderson has made 348 appearances for the Dons in total and scored 19 goals. He has also earned 11 caps for Scotland.
