The Terrible Journalism & Tom English Thread

It's that time of year again, with the Scottish Cup fourth round on the horizon and the fixtures are dumped below the National League South on the BBC.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/scores-fixtures/2024-01-20

This is a long-term whinge, but I don't know why organisations like the BBC feel the need to try ranking the British leagues in order of perceived importance. When I was a kid, periodicals and stuff like the vidiprinter used to list the English leagues/cups followed by the Scots, and I don't know what was wrong with that. If they could be arsed, they could add toggle buttons to add/remove a country's competitions on the general fixtures/results page, but they don't appear to have done anything to that site in years.

Remember when hovering over a club's form on the league tables would show the result that they'd won/drawn/lost? First that feature was dropped from the Scottish lower leagues once The Rangers made it to the Premiership, and it seems to have disappeared from all leagues now. Mystifying decision to remove a useful feature when leaving it alone would surely have been less work.

I think they got it from a site like Soccerway and when Soccerway updated their code, the link broke, so the bbc could not be arsed fixing their code

This ongoing "Yooooz said McGinn wasn't good enough!!!!" patter is tragic.

There have been loads of players who have excelled at other Scottish clubs but not made the step up when going to the OF. McGinn was obviously a good player at St Mirren and Hibs, but it's 20/20 hindsight for anyone to claim they thought he'd have developed to the extent that he has.

There'll have been loads of Hibs fans who claimed for ages that Riordan was easily good enough to play for the Old Firm. How did that turn out? People make judgement calls all the time.

He left Hibs to go and play in the Championship down south, and his progression has kicked on from there. It's debatable whether he'd have been as good a player at or for Celtic as he has turned out to be. It's notable that he's now working with one of the best coaches in the world. That would not have been the case at Celtic.

You can make the case that Celtic made a poor judgement and have been caught out, but the idea that it was 100% certain at the time of his move that he'd have been a huge success at Celtic is a rewriting of history.

It's just become an absolutely dull social media pile-on thing around certain journalists.

It's turning in to a football version of Decca turning down the chance to sign The Beatles to their label. Didn't think he would make it and he has. Well, there you go.

Social media has a habit of overblowing these things but English does deserve a bit of stick for that.

Mcginn was a no brainer for Celtic, and they didn’t sign him because they can’t bring themselves to pay a fair fee to Diddy Scottish clubs. He may not have reached the same heights at Celtic as he is now but he absolutely would’ve added to them, and English tried to defend their penny pinching.

That would be fair if their main player of the last decade or so and captain at that time hadn't been a big-money buy from... Hibs.

They didn't think McGinn was worth the money. And maybe to them he wouldn't have been. We'll never know.

We’ll agree to disagree. I don’t think it’s controversial in the slightest to say Celtic made a poor decision. Clubs make poor judgements all the time, it isn’t a massive deal.

Im glad McGinn, and Ferguson, didnt end up at either Celtic or Rangers.

Theyd have ruined them by now.
