Andy Murray The Greatest and General Tennis Chat

All in the same half would have been stacked enough, but aye, the same quarter is mental. Nishikori and the in-form Dimitrov will probably await whoever comes out on top in the semi-final as well.

Murray won't get a better chance to finally win here.

A bit concerning that he's now lost twice recently to relatively poor players using serve-volley tactics. WIll open the door to more players trying it and he'll need to come up with a way of combating that. Against Zverev and Pospisil he's looked a bit short of ideas. His lob is a great shot when used sparingly and makes the highlight real, but when players are consistently coming to the net it's not really effective or reliable enough over a whole match.

Obviously he served terribly, and has always been poor at Indian Wells, so not enough to be overly concerned at, still disappointing though.

Kyrgios beats Djokovic in straight sets for the second time in as many weeks. Even more impressive considering he beat Sascha Zverev in straight sets in the previous round. Nadal or Federer up next for him.

That result also puts Murray 3,090 points clear of Djokovic in the rankings. If Murray can have a good tournament in Miami at the end of the month, he could end up at least another thousand points ahead.

Is a thousand points a lot in tennis? How many do you get for, say, winning a Grand Slam?

2000 for a Grand Slam
1000 for a Masters 1000 event
500 for a 500 Series
250 for a 250 Series
80- 125 for challenger events
18-35 for futures events
Upto 1500 (200 for each round robin match win+ 400 semi win+500) for overall winner in the World Tour Final
Davis Cup and Olympics no longer gain you points

I don't agree that Davis Cup should earn you points, as it unfairly disadvantages players from the diddy countries. Seems a bit mental taking the Olympics out though. What's the logic in that? I'd say it's the fifth or sixth biggest event in tennis.

It was 750 points for Gold at the Olympics. I think the Davis Cup was worth about 600 points for the year if your country won it?

Murray would have reached number one sooner and be even further ahead now if they never dropped them. Sure they only lasted 12 months rather than the full four years between events, though.

Murray withdraws from the Miami Masters: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/39317104

It did seem like he was shaking his arm a bit last week, so hopefully it's just a minor precaution.

Shame he won't get a chance to play for more points, but unless Djokovic retains the title he'll go further ahead anyway.

Hopefully he's fully fit for the clay then grass court seasons.

Although Djokovic hasn't officially pulled out one of his fan girl journalists has said that he will be missing the tournament and she is usually correct.  If both pull out it it will mean Stan Wawrinka will be the number one seed at a Masters Event for the first time in his career.  If he was to win the final tomorrow, a very good clay court season could see him sneak to second in the world if Djokovic continues to struggle.

Murray will be dropping 90 points from Miami last year but as this will count as an exemption, his 150 points from Doha will now count towards his ranking. So he'll net gain 60 points.  Djokovic has no non countable tournaments so he will lose 1000 points if he doesn't play.
