My family have served in the army, several of them forced to fight needless wars or conflicts and had their lives and mental health destroyed as a result and considering their stories of friends being blown up beside them etc, they were the lucky ones, my mum even had her knee shattered serving in the TA whilst on training and its given her basically a lifetime of pain and impacted her massively, all for a pittance of a military sickness pension. I absolutely value the people who would defend us but jesus christ the fetishism is mental, I donate at George Sq every year and leave one of the wee crosses at regimental signs where my family served, but I dont wear a poppy, its become a symbol of the vapid culture we have transcended towards. Its all about the gestures and tacky as f**k, Rangers with their 21 gun salutes and SAS abseiling down the stand sums it up best for me, all that gesture and pomp yet go and look at the actual sums they raise and donate amongst the most apparent ‘staunchest’ fans in the country. Scrap the poppy stuff and commit to decent army pensions, health care and transition to civi life for personnel, support them as we should support anyone who needs our help. Thats how you show how much you care etc.
