Shaun Byrne is at Livingston now

Maybe not that clear but at the top of the Aberdeen post it said "The whereabouts last year of players aged 16-19 in season 2010-11".  I made the list a month or two ago so haven't got round to updating it to account for transfers. A few of the Aberdeen ones for example have dropped (back) into non-league for the coming season, McRobbie for one iirc at Cumnock.

Ta for the correction though.

And as far as I'm aware kerr young has chosen the well trodden ex youth player path of drinking and fighting over attempting to have any sort of football career.

cheers - seems he left midseason anyway (without making an appearance in 15/16) to go to Bonnyrigg.

The under 20 teams are pretty shite tbh. Well in comparison to lower league clubs. You'll find most players from these teams either drop out of football completely or if they are good end up at a lower league club. The exceptions will more than likely have broken into the clubs first team come 18/19/20.

Cmon the lok now doing a smashing job of backing up this point.

The players in these teams are not future international players. And if they are they'll have broken into their clubs 1st team pretty quickly.

Ah well, things are clearly great as they are then: no need for change when our under 20 teams are 'shite' and our national team hasn't been doing too well over a period of decades.

If only there was a way for our best youngsters to gain more experience at a higher level, train them better, and allow them to develop effective relationships by playing alongside each other game after game...

There is a way for that to happen. It's called a loan.

As much as I really wouldn't like it to happen I do worry that in terms of youth player development there might be something in it. It's well established in Germany and Spain who arguably are producing the best young players in Europe right now, France aside.

It would require structural change, perhaps two 16 team leagues for which B teams can't play in sitting above an 18 team conference limited to say 5 or 6 B teams. I wouldn't be wildly against that.

Plenty nations with B teams are poor, and plenty without do perfectly well including England, Italy, Wales, Northern Ireland, Eire, Poland, Netherlands*, Portugal, Turkey, Ukraine, Iceland, etc. etc.

*3 B teams have been allowed to fill spaces in the Eerste Divisie

Don't really think the reason for Spain and Germany being good is that some of their clubs reserve teams get to play competitive football against the countries diddy clubs

Youth players playing against men's teams is surely better that another bunch of plooky youths. Not saying it's the reason but it may play a part. Loans serve a purpose but for various reasons clubs won't want some youth to go on loan and some youth who would won't be able to get an offer.

Said this in the other thread but there's plenty of youngsters getting games, sadly the quality of them is the problem. If a young player can't break into a first team up here with the way things are at the moment they'll never be near the national team anyway.

Portugal has B teams: five of them play in the second tier.

The point of B sides is to benefit the elite clubs by giving them the means to assess their already bloated squads over a longer term and in a reasonably competitive environment. There is an argument in which that could help elite clubs perform in European football, but I see no good reason why the interests of around 30 league clubs, as well as the two feeder non-league levels, should be placed beneath the credible interests of six or so clubs who stand to regularly compete in European football. The bottom line is though that the purpose of inserting B teams into a league setup has never been about improving the national side. And nor should it be. The purpose of club football is not to prop up its utterly shit cousin, international football. The SFA has substantial financial incentives to make it so, but that is why club-run league bodies should have the final say over any changes in the club game, rather than the blazers. Hamish Husband and his band of TA tossers are not the core constituency of Scottish football: ordinary club fans are.

I can see the arguments for both sides, however if done properly I cant see the problem. I appreciate that some don't want to see their clubs playing against youth teams etc, however if as discussed above the players aren't that good, they would never reach a decent level anyway.

Instead of it being u20's or youth sides, if they were set up proper new clubs, all contracts and money's were separate from the parent club etc similar to the feeder club situation that the bigger clubs use now anyway (although they are usually in another country). I wouldn't have a problem adding them in when / or if there was a re-organisation of regional leagues below SPFL2, but wouldn't let them any higher than the championship. As long as all the players were on a full years contract and had the same rules on movement as any other players - ie no flip flopping between parent and feeder. Although I suppose this would open the door to a big club buying into another team in the league system as a feeder rather than setting up a new one.
