So if you earn £38,000 you pay 19% tax on the first £13,850, 20% on the rest up to £24,000 then 21p on anything up to £38,000? 22 minutes ago, Kyle said: Give that man a coconut.... that's certainly my interpretation and the suggestion from people with a lot more knowledge than me on twitter. Judging by the speeches of Murdo and Leonard, the tax announcement certainly caught them on the hop. My interpretation is you pay nothing on the first £11,850 then 19% on £11,851 to £13,850 and so forth.

Murdo is a fuckwit of the highest order, time will tell where Leonard comes on the scale, I certainly wouldn't allow Murdo to push my shopping trolley.
RiG
Cheers lads. Looks like I'll be paying an extra £90 a year in tax. Quite happy if that helps towards getting some extra doctors on the go.

Oh aye I know that it was I just making light of it. Going by some of the reactions on Twitter you'd think the SNP had stolen some peoples life savings.
Silvio Tattiescone
Works out as a 3% tax rise for me. Nothing to be bothered about but will this only be the first in a number of small rises - none of them worth complaining about in themselves but cumulatively adding up? Has anyone explained why Scots need to pay more tax than others?

Those of in the public sector at a middle management level, 35-45k, will also have tax increase offset by removal of 1% pay cap. We are all rich. Thanks Nicola.

Has anyone explained why Scots need to pay more tax than others? Probably because we'd like better services than others. That's my main problem. They've announced a decent wage rise for the public sector but I'd have preferred more people being employed to relive some of the pressure on the NHS (for instance) instead of just a wage rise. Also, does someone know if the NHS pension is paid from the Scottish NHS budget or a national scheme because if we continue to increase the pension deficit by having higher wages up here, we will be storing up trouble for future generations. Overall though, it looks positive.

ICTChris
Well done to the SNP for allowing people to humblebrag about how not bothered they are about paying extra tax while at the same time humblebragging about their above average salaries.

Your first point is bang on though. In addition to that Scotland costs more. To provide health, social work and education services to place like Highland, Perthshire, Argyll, Galloway and the borders costs more than the equivalent per head contribution required to do same in England.

Has anyone explained why Scots need to pay more tax than others? I for one prefer not to remain locked into the race to the bottom which austerity and tory philosophy has thrust upon us. If we had control of all income generated in Scotland together with full control of tax and spending then you'd be able to have a more complete response but for as long as we need to do what we can with what we have, there is nothing wrong with a relatively progressive approach to tax. This will cost me on a personal level but I think it is justified because I want to see decent public services and the option is to follow the lead of conservative run local authorities and hit some desperate areas really hard. ETA - not humblebragging!! Edited December 14, 2017 by HTG

How have you managed to get a 3% rise when the maximum put on any band was 1%? eta - hmm, I guess it is possible if you are in the >£150K band eta2 - no, I was right - just under a 1% increase in tax is the maximum possible (measured against salary) Edited December 14, 2017 by Crossbill

ChrisMFCfan1886
I would recommend that nobody holds their breath waiting on the LibDems supporting this budget, the SNP could guarantee free travel on northern isles ferries, £200bn for mental health, unlimited funds for education, the least centralised police force possible and college places for everyone, and the LibDems would still vote against it. Believe me, I know these people, and that's why I'm seriously considering stopping my membership of the party.
