Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

Harry Robinson returning from his loan too, because he's really got a chance of a first team spot in this squad of 40 players.

Wish we’d snuck Connor shields in his suitcase back here, decent player he is and is a young promising striker one for the summer I hope.

I’m not being precious at all. Reading through the thread I don’t think anyone is doing anything other than discussing Motherwell in a respectful way. My man @capt_oats often pops into the saints thread and does similar. Also you’re about the only team making signings and I was just making an observation after looking at your squad - I don’t think it’s unfair to say it is indeed fucking massive.

Edit: I’ve just seen Capt_oats post above and I take back about what I said about your midfield being normal sized. 9 central midfielders for 3 starting slots is ridiculous, even if some of those players are youngsters/injured. 34 players (not including Carson and Fox!) in the squad, even accounting for injuries, is surely far too much.

Nah, me either. Make yourself at home.

Tbf, while there's a lot of bodies there, so many of them are done for us in the summer, and for a big chunk of the season, we've had f**k all to change it in midfield, or the backline, when it really felt we needed to.

What's the loan patter just now, can we send folk back out? I wondered if Alexander had decided that he wanted a good look at Robinson, Stemple, MacIver and the rest to see if they've got a longer term future under him.

Tomorrow nights bench will be interesting.  Who gets bombed out. Maybe too early for all the new guys.  It also means we have folk that have never previously been overawed at a Celtic team.  An element of a special team for that game perhaps.

As far as I'm aware we can bounce folk out on loan to the Championship and below all through February. Folk like Semple have been training at the club through the season anyway so I'd think Alexander would be able to have had a look at all of them. Loaning Semple to a team at the other end of the country in a fucking pandemic seems fucking daft in hindsight.

From that squad you could easily imagine Semple, Cornelius, Devine, MacIver, Devine (and Hussain) all being loaned out once the lower leagues start up again.

In terms of winners and losers this window I don't know if there are many of the former but bringing in 2 wingers and a couple of centre backs doesn't seem like a vote of confidence for Seedorf, Hastie and Lamie (or McGinley to a lesser extent).

Overall though while I'd imagine folk are quite underwhelmed by the names:

Kelly = upgrade on Chapman
Lawleff = upgrade on Seedorf/Hastie
Smith = not Jordan White
Foley  = our only real cover in midfield had been Maguire and Cornelius
Roberts = not Seedorf/Hastie
Nolan = not Ricki Lamie

If Magloire ends up signing then yeah, "also not Ricki Lamie".

Either way this window has definitely been an admission that we absolutely fucked it in the summer.

I think it's difficult to argue against that. It also looks like the plan is to rip it all up at the end of the season and effectively start again (and much as I don't like the risk that comes with huge rebuilds, I think it is the right approach).
