Motherwell FC - A Thread For All Seasons

Not if you know what you are doing.

My use of the word speculative has created a wee reaction for whatever reason 🤷‍♂️. Maybe I should have used the word risky instead. Jesus I wish I had !

Virtually every player we sign is speculative. It may be based on lots of knowledge, but with the money we can afford to pay every signing carries a risk as to whether they perform for Motherwell or not.

At the moment it looks like a rather big mistake.

I think this is absolutely fair. Every signing we ever make is a bit of a gamble. It just seems fucking mental that this gamble took months to do while we had nobody at the club who knew how to defend.

I would love to see him come good but I just can't see it happening. He's an attacking midfielder who is nowhere near the level of Spittal (who would have been a shoo-in for our POTY until that fucking weirdo Twitter account triggered KVV into becoming the best player in the country).

See there's an aspect of this where I'm still very much at the benefit-of-the-doubt stage. Not in the sense of whether it'll work out or not, it already feels like a bust, but just generally about the whole situation he finds himself in.

Aye agreed. I'm also, I think, still in the benefit of the doubt category that he could do something skills wise. But sounds like the attitude isn't there/homesick in true Football Manager style.

Just don't mention 'Uppercrust' or the 'Electric Bar', I found that out lately as well.

🤷‍♂️🤣

I was banging that drum for ages last summer. So much so I bored myself !

As much as KVV goals lead us to the bottom 6 trophy the addition of an entirely new defence contributed just as much. If only we had Casey, Butcher, Furlong and Max from the start of the season. Now of course we are back to square 1 and failure to address will I am afraid lead to similar outcome. Time yet but the clock is ticking.

Not sure if this has been posted already lads but you boys are about to sign Fletcher.

Heard this rumour. I’m not convinced it’s a good signing. Assuming he will be on a decent wage and not sure he will contribute enough to justify it.

If we can get him, I'd be up for that as he still looked a decent player to me last season playing in a shite Utd side and he is definitely "quality". Agree that the gamble is we don't get 30+ games out of him given his age despite him presumably being the top earner at the club - but is the gamble any worse than bringing in another English League 2 boy and hope it works out yet again?

Fletcher is one of these ones where unless you know the details it's impossible to judge.

If we're paying him anything like United and relying on him as our main striker, it's a terrible move.

If he's made his money and just wants to play his (potentially) last season in the top-flight rather than v Airdrie et al and he's the replacement for Mandron/Obika rather than KVV, it's a potentially excellent move.

Yes he is 36 and perhaps with age comes more injury concerns, but he has played between 30 and 40+ matches in his last 3 seasons.

He also averages 1 goal every 3-4 games. Not as prolific as KVV but then again no one we sign is likely to come close to Kev exploits last season. Fletcher and Efford / Obika would be a decent partnership at our level and budget.

I think it would be a decent sensible signing and agree that it would be less speculative (oh oh) than lower leagues down south or overseas.

And without getting into the penalties debate again, McGrath scored a wad of them for United (at least late in the season). If Fletcher had taken (and scored obviously) them instead, he'd have had 14 or 15 goals for a rotten team who got relegated, which everyone would suddenly call very respectable.

I'm naturally sceptical about any sort of ITK posts from Dundee but this seems to be the position from another United forum.

Which I suppose puts United in a bit of a bind if they're actually quite keen not to have a player stuck on their books on a daft wage while they're in the Championship as, without knowing the precise details, it seems a stretch to think that any club is going to match the wage he's supposedly on with them.

Beyond that, with the caveats that he was on an appropriate wage for a modest club like us then I'm all for us signing him.

Taking a quick swatch at some of his performances last season then it's kind of easy to see why we'd be interested in him to replace KVV as he offers all the hold up/link up side of the game that we got from Kev.

On top of that he also played the 3rd most minutes of their entire squad:

Aye - short back and sides and it's a deal.

I'd say so, although maybe I'm being harsh and the memory of Wes has just given me an irrational fear of Fletchers with man buns leading the line for us.

Absolutely rational imo - man bun must go. Or if not, must be roundly slagged.

From a playing perspective, I'd take as long it's not a bank breaker.  He still had a fair bit to contribute as far as I could see when we played Utd and 10 goals in all comps last year is better than any player, other than KVV, could manage
