He might step up and do well... Good luck to him I guess. We've signed guys like him before.

Who have we signed like him before?

I imagine you saw this doing any analysis but was the only reason that we could ever get a 5-2-3 working in the first place because McCann was clearly an excellent player alongside an intelligent player like bryson or Craig and now we have no ball winner and no intelligent midfielders either?

Wide CBs who could get forward. WBs who could cause problems without support. CMs who could use the ball under pressure and cover the whole park. Attacker who can do everything alone.

All things  i think you seem to need for it to be effective.

Levein and Co seem very keen on 3-5-2 kind of shape so there's a good chance he'd be used as a left wing back.

It’ll be interesting to see if that’s the plan moving forward. Hasn’t been often they’ve actually had wingers available to them so it’s hard to tell. The times we have changed shape we’ve looked so much better.

I would hope, whether it's Levein or Kirk choosing the match day tactics/lineups, that they've learned and are more willing to use different setups like they've done with the 4231 we used the last couple games. I'm not completely against a 352, but it should be used in the right circumstances.

I don't want this to happen because it would be a disaster, but on paper Phillips has the pace and tenacity to be the pressing player and Macpherson thinks he's prime Xabi Alonso so that could be the most frustrating duo of all time to watch

Where their career was on a seemingly downward trajectory but potentially hungry with something to prove?

Loads that went on to do well. From the top of my head, loads.

MoH, Kennedy, Vine, Cregg, Anderson, Fraser Wright. Arguably Morris as well - he wasn't exactly flying when we signed him

Probably the majority of our youth successes in the last 10ish years have also been released by other clubs due to "not being good enough" and us picking them up at 17-18 as well.

We've signed Sidibeh from the Timbuktu leagues recently as well.

I don't know whether or not he's good enough but I do imagine a lot of the Saints fans turning their noses up at him have seen as much of him as I have - nearly zero.

I see that Turner Cooke got a start for Newcastle as they got pumped 8-0 by the A-League all star team, that defender Macca missed out on Courtney-Perkins seemed to have played and scored in that too

I don’t think any of them really compare to Josh McPake to be honest. I understand your point but the players you’ve listed had some kind of pedigree to begin with.

Is there a Radar for McPake @RandomGuy.?

Decent enough I guess? Kind of like Connor Smith on paper, and before seeing them play, that it probably makes some sense for our back up players (on a reduced budget) to be cheap punts on young players who've shown promise in the past so you're aswell giving them a chance first?

If hes coming in a starter its a big issue but I'd be surprised if its not just number bulking out wide for pennies due to how few options we had there this season.

This is probably his last chance at a full time club. I don’t see an issue if he’s standing out in training.

Yeah I'm not exactly buzzing at the thought of Josh McPake but I can see the logic in the signing if it does come off. He'll be cheap, gives us an option wide and will bulk out the squad in a part of the team where we had pretty much no options for most of the season. Plus he's been training with us for quite a while now, surely they wouldn't sign him if he's looked completely out of his depth.

Yeah it probably comes down to his own mindset really, as this is a proper "pick a path" moment for him.

Its pure speculation but I feel like a lot of Connor Smiths problem is how hes approached it, as he reeks of someone who doesn't understand how easy it is to just lose it and end up dossing about the lower tiers for years. Hes been there but its always been on loan from a Premiership side. He's huffing and puffing about this and that, then one day he'll realise hes in his mid-20s, its August and he doesn't have a club, and his options are far more limited than he realised.

It feels like McPake has already been through that. That maybe means he'll come in with a hunger.

It really is McPake's last chance.

I have doubts about his game translating to the top level. His best performances were against the Edinburgh City and Annan. Even decent league 1 full backs figured him out pretty quickly.

His foiled attempts to cut in and shoot will infuriate you.

Hope he proves me wrong though. No shortage of effort and he took the physical stuff pretty well.

That's how I feel about it. I would rather the club take punts on cheap young players who have something to prove rather than some 30yo has been who wants a final payday.

Sidenote, anyone know exactly how many appearances Liam Craig made for us in the league only?

Overall I get him on 453, but unsure on league only as Transfermarkt is being weird.

I get 378?

363 ?  Do you include sub appearances?

Didnt realise he’s coaching Queens Park reserves now.

Yeah just overall league appearances for us, both top flight and second tier.

Official site talks about 453 which I'm sure is all competitions.
