Double Winning St Johnstone FC Thread

Hope this isn't a situation where the player wasn't treated with respect and made it clear to him they didn't plan on making him an offer.

We've been linked with Ronan Hale on twitter now too.

That's two centre forwards we've been linked with now in the press 🤔

Only seen links from Wigan based accounts when writing about their interest. I think they just got us mixed up with County who have made a bid.

Experience and age is a massive concern as you rarely do well with an inexperienced defence and keeper. Only really Keltjens and Rae that have more than 2 seasons of regular first team football.

Goalkeepers

Josh Rae - (23)

Ross Sinclair - (23)

Craig Hepburn - (19)

Defence

David Keltjens - (29)

Dare Olufunwa - (22)

Sam McClelland - (22)

Jack Sanders - (25)

Liam Parker - (20)

In fairness we won the double with a defence all under 25 except Booth, and he was against Tanser who was also quite young at the time. I think age doesn't always account for experience, although the market were clearly in it probably means we'll need to find two more players in their mid 30s on their way down to replace what we've lost, which isn't ideal.

Find it bizarre that we didn't just announce McGowan was away with the other released players. It may be the club hadn't been able to contact him/his agent at the time of the cull but we've had at least a month since. He, like Considine, came in and did a job for us. I wouldn't have been against him staying but equally can't say I'm particularly disappointed that he's away.

We really need to get some positive news soon though, it's just one negative story after another, including the last two signings.

Looking at that list, we need what? A more experienced Goalkeeper, a starter and backup RB and a backup for Keltjens starting LB? Unless Keltjens starts RB and we need the opposite.

Keltjens can't be first choice LB. It's a mad shout that seems to be growing because he wasn't shite there v Huntly and has filled in there before.

It's just miles away from what a top flight club should be doing.

I think they wanted Hanlon but he chose Raith, understandably due to the offer they gave him. It simply won't be easy finding a left sided CB with experience who can also lead a defence so it'll take time.

In theory Rae, McClelland and Keltjens should be fine. Rae and McClelland are inexperienced, particularly at this level, but both performed well enough in the Championship to deserve the chance in the top flight so it's not as if they're Olufunwa-esque kids new to senior football.

Oh aye he definitely shouldn't be, think most people are just saying it cause we've not heard much about a new LB. Would hope him starting LB isn't Leveins plan come August.

That's two Saints managers that didn't want McGowan. It doesn't matter how the fans rate them on the field, that's only a small part of the picture.

Aye.

Like he was okay and probably would've been okay again, but hes definitely benefiting from the fact hes played in shite Saints sides where simply being half competent was enough to look good.

Could cover multiple positions, experienced etc., so could see some logic in keeping him, but we wanted to improve on him a month ago and he won't want to be back up, so cheerio works for everyone.

McGowan and Gordon leaving can only be judged when it’s known who comes in to replace them.

At the minute our defence looks far weaker, but I’m still hoping there’s a lot of big signings to come in. Surely..

Folk seem fine with McClelland starting, presumably because he was decent in a Utd team which was scudding opposition most weeks last season due to a vastly superior budget.

Hopefully he’s come on a lot and was just not ready last season, but in the few games he played he looked miles off it, and painfully slow.
