Dons_1988
Bullying tactics. He knows how important the US is now to the UK so he’s going to milk this as much as he can and humiliate them in the process.Openly insult your ambassadors, your PM, your government, the mayor of your capital city and yet still you will come crawling back looking for trade deals.

Already The Telegraph has an online editorial advocating Farage as UK ambassador to the USA under a Johnston government. It all looks very co-ordinated, and is undoubtedly only the first attack by the right-wing on all UK government institutions. They want to drive out liberals and replace them with hardliners. The purge has begun.

Was thinking the same, and I can't quite get my head around whether: Trump, Johnson etc are so stupid that they don't believe mere mortals can connect piss easy dots having this play out publically, or, they just have complete contempt for peoples intelligence and anyone standing in their way of their goals.

Unfortunately I believe the later. There has been a consistent dumbing down this millennium and sadly loads of people will be more concerned about what is happening in ‘Love Island’ or whatever reality show is currently on TV.

I used to think that the whole thing....Trump, Brexit etc....was just an unlucky combination of bumbling stupidity that would somehow go away once clever people woke up the next morning. Now I realise that there's a more malevolent force at play in the background.....not one individual or organisation, but an ideology....that sees its chance to grab complete power and impose itself on everyone.

Mainstream conservatives in the U.S. and U.K. have abandoned rationale in favour of populism. Prior to Trump’s election look at what people like Mitch McConnell were saying about him. Prior to the Brexit bery few Tory MPs would have gambled the British economy on an ideological whim.
kennysmassiveego
The former US ambassador Meyers stated on sky news that there had been several similar reports from UK ambassadors during his time as a diplomat . That’s the problem with having a “ business man” in the White House with no political or diplomatic experiences , sh!t like this goes on all the time but it doesn’t impact on the machinery of government or diplomacy between the countries , nor is it commented on . You just need to have an ultra thin skinned twat like Trump to get wind of it and all hell breaks loose . im reading In Defence of the Realm atm about MI5 and MI6 and part of the job is to compile reports on foreign governments and this sort of thing was happening in the 1930’s and often the UK and USA and commonwealth security agencies would read the reports before the PM or president , and often water them down so as not to cause offence before presenting them to their masters .
tirso
While all of what people are saying is correct, it is almost inconceivable the US President could deal with this Ambassador now too. The leaking undermines diplomacy on both sides.

I remember when Wikileaks released all the State Department messages and some diplomat was seriously ripping the pish out of Prince Andrew and his globetrotting for UK plc efforts. All was quietly forgotten about and relations stayed the same. A time of grown ups now sadly lacking.

I think its a bit of both. They think that most people are too stupid to notice but know that many will. I don't think they care though, because they know that even when people do notice, its already too late for anyone to do much about it.
dirty dingus
The UK Govt should be expelling the US counterpart if the man baby doesn't respect the ambassadors position. You just know the Tories will kowtow to Trumps every whim to preserve their fantasist special relationship. This response I seen on twatter sums it up - Brexit: Swapping a plate at a table with 27 countries for a dog-bowl at the feet of the US.
