At least one of the Republicans who voted for Jordan yesterday has voted against him, and they're only on the Cs in the alphabetical roll call.

The loonball right are getting an absolute kicking here.  So they’ll end up without their guy and keep voting the poor sod who does get the job out.     Hope nobody is expecting any governmenting anytime soon.

I think they might give the pro tem Speaker more powers for a month or so in case Israel is running out of bombs.

Jordan gained 2 votes but lost 4, consensus seems to be that he's fucked, more people voting against him than Mccarthy on his worst ballot. House in recess to decide where to go, looks like either a 3rd vote for Jordan or a vote to give the temporary Speaker more powers for a limited period.

My knowledge of US politics is limited too -they have a lot of silly names; they have a lot of silly haircuts; they have a president and two types of House of Commons. republicans = tories+ ukip; democrats = tories + labour.

bearing that in mind, can someone explain what’s going on there?

As the video above explains, the Speaker of the House controls much of what goes on, and what gets voted on. It’s not absolute, but it’s pretty close. The House and the Senate are much more co-equals than the Commons and the Lords in the British system.

Republican Party (GOP-Grand Old Party): Badly split between the Trump wing and the Bush wing. The Trump wing is UKIP wrapped in the stars and stripes;an American Nazi party, with a weird fetish for Russia, Putin and an urge to rule rather than represent. The Bush wing is closer to the Tories; trickle down economics, tax cuts, benefit cuts, fear the brown people. Have moved steadily right for decades, with current Bush wing R’s being akin to far right wing R’s in the 50’s and 60’s. Huge presence in the middle of the U.S., and have become the party of the uneducated masses and the rich business types.

Democratic Party: Also somewhat split between Progressives and Moderates. Roughly akin to Social Democrats and Labour in size and influence (if not alignment), the Moderates being the larger group. However, they generally work reasonably well together, unlike the wings of the Republican Party. For the longest time were the working man’s party, but now are the urban resident and elites party, heavily based in cities and on the coasts. Current Moderate Democrats are pretty much Republicans from the 60’s and 70’s.

Independents: Various positions and views, normally squeezed between the Moderate Democrats and the Bush wing Republicans, almost always caucus with the Democrats.

Green and similar parties, effectively have no hope in the U.S. system as currently configured.

The Eleventh Commandment of the Republican Party was always “Thou shall not speak ill of another Republican”, but Trump shattered that. As such, a battle for the soul of the Republican Party is underway, with the Jewish Space Laser Reich wing of the Trump crowd causing the removal of McCarthy in an expectation the main Trump crowd and the Bush contingent would bend to their will. Instead, it appears some R’s have grown a spine and things are going to be boisterous for a while. Meanwhile, the D’s are voting en bloc for Jeffries, meaning that the R’s need to get all but three or four R votes to elect a speaker.

Amusingly, far too many of the Republican base don’t understand the basics of the Speaker election, and are being told by their nutjob representatives that when Jordan fails to be elected 200-214 with 20 votes other, that the Democrats are “blocking” Jordan…and the morons believe it. In the same way the Democrats “voted McCarthy out” because they all voted no confidence with some Republicans. So the Reich wingers that took out McCarthy by voting with the Democrats say they didn’t like McCarthy because HE worked with Democrats…you really can’t make it up.

Jordan and his pals arranged robocalls to the districts of R’s who voted against him in the first round. Multiple threats have been recorded against those House members, their staff, families and offices.

For amusement…

First vote: (432 voting, 217 needed)

Jeffries - 212

Jordan - 200

Scalise - 7

McCarthy - 6

Zeldin - 4

Emmer - 1

Cole - 1

Massie - 1

Second vote: (433 voting, 217 needed)

Jeffries - 212

Jordan - 199

Scalise - 7

McCarthy - 5

Zeldin - 3

Donalds - 1

Emmer - 1

Garcia - 1

Miller - 1

Boehner - 1

Granger - 1

Westerman - 1

Looks like Allen Weisselberg could be in deep shit (again) this time with potentially far more serious consequences as a result of his testimony during the NYS fraud trial.  I can understand why he feels loyal to Trump but you have to ask at what point he puts his own interests first.

That’s a pretty decent summary.

Shout out to the Libertarian fukwits who seem to be the go-to for any Republican I speak to (i’ve been in USA since 1995) after I point out the madness that is Trump GOP and longer term GOP non policies in general.

The Libertarians who continually bleat about a broken two party system yet everyone of the Libertarians in federal office just happens to have a big red R after his/her name.

The same Libertarians in lock step with the Republicans on everything despite (unlike the Democrats) having a major tenet of their platform being open borders:

Sidney Powell pleads guilty to six counts, gets 6 years probation, an $9,0006,000 fine, turns over documents, an apology letter and agrees to testify against other defendents.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/19/politics/sidney-powell-fulton-county-georgia-2020-election-subversion/index.html

Chesebro reportedly declines a plea deal that included just guilty to racketeering and only a $10,000 fine, 3 years probation and a letter of apology. Under Georgia’s first offender law, the charge would also have been expunged if he completed the probation.

https://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/fulton-county/chesebro-rejects-plea-deal-ahead-georgia-election-interference-trial-abc-reports/PAYKLKQWN5DWZJLNUNLI6VCY2A/#

With Powell flipping, Chesebro can no longer expect any similar offer to be extended again unless he has something else to bring to the table…Judy selection starts tomorrow. Powell flipping is a huge blow to Trump’s defence, as she was present at most meetings and will be required to testify.

Sydney Powell's pled guilty in Atlanta on a plea deal, 6 years probation on condition she testifies truthfully in future trials and hands over any dirt on other accused.

Think she's about the 4th to flip.

P.S. Old news but I'll leave it there..

Second of the defendants in the Georgia case after Hall (not sure how many now overall, as several have recanted testimony, which is another form of flipping)…the quicker you flip, the better the deal. Gotta wonder what Chesebro is thinking now that Powell beat him to the deal? Was he counting on Powell staying loyal so the DA didn’t have as much data to work with? If so, he’s completely f**ked now. Since he’s pushing for fast trial, I’d expect any offer to him now would include jail time to send a message to the other defendants that it’s sing early or miss the meal.

Jordan's given up, looks like the bow tied temporary speaker will be voted more powers

This is pretty significant imo.  She’s going to be fun if called to give evidence, she was the one who even Trump’s inner circle thought was unhinged.

I wonder if there’s going to be a domino effect.
