J_Stewart
Helmsdale up in Sutherland is known as Helms Deep, because it's overrun with orcs (and they sound similar). Which, if you'd ever met the locals, is actually pretty generous.

Hedgecutter
A group of us stayed in Helmsdale for uni work and Helms Deep was the name that we also came up with. This was around the time the LOTR was first out at the cinema, so it was much witter at the time. Eta: on the pronunciation thing in that part of the world, does Brora sound like bro-ra or Braw-ra? I hear both used.

Hedgecutter
Whilst also at it, when pronouncing Tynecastle, do people put the emphasis on the Tyne or the Castle? (I frequently hear folk on the radio say the latter as if it's two words). I'm TYNEcastle.
welshbairn
Me too, but I also say NEWcastle, which is a no no down there.
