The hosts and the favourites will both be struggling to progress to the quarters.

Gabon need to take something from Cameroon and, after defeat against rivals Tunisia, Algeria need to beat Senegal and hope the other result goes their way.

Good to see the 44-year-old Egyptian keeper come on as a sub and break the oldest player record too. Apparently he's now the only fit keeper in the squad.

Ghana's Andre Ayew also broke his Dad's (Abedi Pele) AfCoN scoring record the other night.

Gabon have a fair chance of doing a 'Scotland: Class of 74' and ending up the only unbeaten team in the tournament despite going out at the group stage.

And the crowds and atmosphere will probably drop off now that the hosts are out. The Gabonese gave their team a fair old backing.

The perennial West African big guns through already: Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal. Only waiting on Ivory Coast for a full deck since Nigeria couldn't be arsed qualifying this time around. Burkina Faso doing the region proud in their place by also going through to the quarters last night.

It remains to be seen who from the North African ex-champions can get through.

Egypt (winners in 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010) and Morocco (1976 champions) seem well-placed to progress. As do Tunisia (2004 champions) but one from Tunisia and pre-tournament favourites Algeria (1990 champions) will definitely be going home when the dust settles on the group stages.
