We've discovered that a record 26 clubs competed in the 1947-48 season in three regional divisions and a play-off. More info to follow...

I'll be interested to see how many of them will be Highland League reserve teams and maybe armed forces teams. Well done, can't wait!

I think it might be a load of Ross-shire teams in there too, they drifted in and out of junior/welfare a lot around then. Can't wait to see the updates, promised myself I'd look into it more but I'm just not very good! There is 1 book from 1950's on football in Inverness I would love to see but I'd be surprised if a copy existed anymore

Had a brief unsuccessful google for the book but found this, a jolly good afternoon was had by all!

Thats brilliant! I still don't understand how the ball bounced so well. Anytime you bounce a ball in the snow, it's goes splat and doesn't move or slides sideways.

I can't remember the name of the book but it was a one-off thing done by a publisher in Dundee that seems to have done annuals and stuff like that. I have a note of it somewhere for when I get round to tracking it down properly

A big thank you to Bobby McNally for finding this while he was researching our missing Highland League results.

1947/48 North of Scotland 2nd XI League
We see from the honours list that Inverness Thistle were the champions but how was this achieved?

The agreed plan was for "the top two teams in each section to play off for the championship on the home and away principle". [Football Times, Nov '47.]

Two of the sections were completed with Rothes being favourites to top the Morayshire Section.
The report continues "It is tough on Thistle, after annexing 35 points out of 36, not to get any award".

This seems to rule out Thistle taking the title unless they played the winners of the Ross-shire section.

Central Section
P W D L F A Pts
Inverness Thistle 'A' 18 17 1 0 81 31 35
Hill Rovers 18 11 0 7 74 41 22
Fort George 18 9 3 6 55 42 21
Corinthians 18 9 3 6 56 46 21
Caledonian 'A' 18 7 5 6 62 55 19
Clachnacuddin 'A' 18 6 4 8 53 64 16
Camerons 18 7 2 9 45 64 16
Nelson 18 6 3 9 47 48 15
Nairn County 'A' 18 1 7 10 37 67 9
Resistance Welders 18 2 4 12 30 74 6

Ross-shire Section
P W D L Pts
RNAS Evanton 16 12 1 3 25
Balintore 16 10 2 4 22
Ross County 'A' 16 10 2 4 22
Cromarty 16 9 2 5 20
Invergordon 16 7 4 5 18
Alness 16 6 5 5 17
Tain 16 7 1 8 15
Logie (Athletic?) 16 1 2 13 4
RAF 16 1 1 14 3

Morayshire Section Membership
Rothes 'A'
Elgin City 'A'
Forres Mechanics 'A'
Lossiemouth 'A'
30th TB
Auldearn
RNAS Lossiemouth

As Ross-shire section winners RNAS Evanton had disbanded after the base closed in late March,  Ross County and Balintore, who tied as runners up, "the second-placed teams will have to play an extra game to decide the qualifier for the knock-out competition for the Championship Shield."

On 1/5/48 the People's Journal noted... "winners here to meet winners of Inverness section, with winners of that game to meet "Morayshire League leaders" (unnamed). That playoff, on that day at Invergordon, resulted Ross County 4-3 Balintore.

In an apparent change: "County now play the leaders of the Inverness Section for the North of Scotland Minor League Championship [sic], but so far have heard nothing about the date for that game."

From this it appears that the Moray section was unfinished.

I have read somewhere about when RNAS Evanton folded, they gave Black Rock Rovers their pitch at the airfield (the entrance of what is now Technip) for the next few seasons while they got their own ground sorted in Culcairn. Which is now more commonly known as Clach U20s home park!

Logie I believe were based at a small barracks just off where the Nigg Roundabout is on the A9.

I'm not very organised so thats about as far as I got 😂

Took the camera with me for the Inverness Atheltic vs Invergordon game.  Invergordon settled any nerves with a goal within the first 5 mins, before making it 2-0 in the first half.  Second half, Inverness were the better side and with the wind in their favour, but just couldn't get that final bit of magic in front of goal.

Your links aren't working for me, but great photos on your website. Thought this was Ross Tokely playing through his Highland League ban for a moment.

Orkney copy Fort William by being unable to raise a team, for Golspie away in their case.

Did all the teams actually think the season would be done in march and only signed players till then?

Or has everyone on an ammy contract chucked it to go n play in the summer leagues?

I don't think most of the summer leagues have got going yet so I doubt that's the reason, I remember Orkney pulled out of one of the cups because the players were more keen on an Island 7s tournament though, so who knows. The North Caley will have to give out serious penalties or you could see more clubs not bothering to turn up for meaningless end of season games, especially when there's a load of travel involved.

I tend to be more lenient on the NCL and the teams. It's hard enough to sustain a club and a league, Invergordon won, no playoffs and bar the shouting it's all done and dusted. There needs to be a penalty but I don't think throwing the book at FW (as much as we mock) and Orkney helps anyone
