Were subs usually a thing in matches of this type then?

It obviously predates them being a feature in competitive fixtures by a while here.

Those sort of exhibition matches had their own rules.

Either neds have kicked in a door or someone at Dens has been a tad careless.

Anyway, whilst waiting for the bus earlier on Dens Road I had a wee look inside one of the turnstiles.

Brilliant photo - while I never went to Love Street when it was a big bowl-shaped ground, I do miss the old place. Have also bowled at Caledonia BC which is just to the right of Love Street many a time and had some good drinking days in there. A great bunch of lads.

There's a good article about this match in the current issue of Backpass magazine and much is made of the English indignation, Alf Ramsey in particular, about the squad of 16 which the ROW rotated during the game.

Apparently Jimmy Greaves scored a wonder goal similar to the famous 'slalom' effort versus Man Utd at WHL but Bobby Davidson had already blown for a defender having tried to impede him en route.  Davidson later apologised to him

Year might be right in fairness, at that time the even year fixtures were at Hampden and the odd years at Wembley, this changed in 1985 when we had a second consecutive home match against England because in the first half of that year the hoolaginism down south was at its peak with high profile riots at Luton v Millwall and Birmingham v Leeds and several other incidents, that was the year on the post on a Facebook page I seen it on, looking at the kit it will either be 82 or 80, I think we had the silk kit with the V neck for the 82 World Cup but unsure if it was used prior to the tournament.

It's the 1980 game I think.

Both players were involved in both matches, but Terry McDermott is in the background and in 1982, he only came on as a sub, 10 minutes after Mariner had gone off injured, having scored the game's only goal.

You're right about the shiny kit too.  It was in place ahead of the 1982 World Cup and was worn in the Home Internationals.

Begs the question what are the oldest turnstyles still in use in Scottish League?  These must be up there?

Bobby Murdoch and Alex Rae lead out their teams for the League Cup Final on 23rd October 1971. Despite being written off by just about everybody outside of Firhill, Thistle would go on to create the biggest ever upset in Scottish Football history. Certainly for a cup final by winning 4-1. (4-0 ht ).

Airdrie created the biggest shock in Scottish football history yesterday.

Trevor Francis (who passed away yesterday) playing at Hampden. Quite a career he had.

Two classic Scotland tops on display.

All five players on display won major European honours. I calculate a combined total of 12 European Cups and 1 ECWC.

As far as I know he's the only monarch to have visited Station Park, Forfar

Unless Haile Selassie was a secret Loons fan.
