Wow, what a coincidence! An unhappy coincidence, I still can't understand the American media as they pointed their cameras directly in the faces of the poor parents of the teacher Christa McAuliffe as they watched the shuttle blow up and their daughter's death in real time as they looked up to the sky from the viewing platform at Cape Canaveral. The Israeli goalkeeper, Avi Ran, had a similar death to Kirsty MacColl. He was killed around 18 months after the match. The Israeli team that day is pictured below. St Mirren fans of a certain vintage may recognise Mechelen's Eli Ohana. If St Mirren fans don't remember Eli Ohana, then here is a reminder... They'd to return from a Wednesday afternoon European tie to play a Saturday afternoon league game. Not exactly an outlandish ask and they did the same after Prague in previous round. Stopover in Munich wasn't problematic. (Btw season before they played European Cup SF in Madrid on Thu night... league game on Sat... then Fri-Sat-Mon over Easter weekend... SF 2nd leg on Thu... league games Sat-Mon!). Edited February 9 by HibeeJibee
Dundee Hibernian
Winners of the Scottish Cup 100 years ago, Airdieonians. In a side which contained Hughie Gallacher and Bob McPhail, both goals in a 2-0 win over Hibernian were scored by Willie Russell. Like his more illustrious colleagues who left for Newcastle and Rangers respectively, Russell went on to serve Preston for six seasons, playing alongside the famous Alex James.
Flybhoy
Paul McStay in said strip on this day in 1989, the 3-2 win in Cyprus where Richard Gough scored a winner in something like the 8th minute of added time in an era when a couple of minutes maximum was the norm.

(Clue: it wasn't the Hibees) Och to be fair at least we managed to win it twice alongside Aberdeen and Rangers. For those fans of a certain age they'll remember the Hearts support wasn't allowed to cross that bridge to gain access to The Dunbar End/Main Stand or back onto Easter Road after the game hence the lyrics to the song we sang in the 80s to the tune to The Blaydon Races. (running along the Albion Road) I think once the new Dunbar End was built and the away support was reduced it was easier for the police to direct fans back onto Easter Road via the bridge. Funny to think that since casuals first hit the streets there are certain Hibs casuals who are still actively involved in that scene, I witnessed a wee tiff at Edinburghs Playhouse before the last Derby when a very young group of Hearts Ultras battled briefly with some known Hibees who let's just say are knocking on the door of No 60 !!!! Time to grow up naw ?
