Another goody from  Saints On This Day‏ @SaintsOTD
On this day in 1955, Saints start their game against Arbroath with 10 men as Archie Baird's flight from Dyce is late. Baird took the field in the 19th minute and Saints went on to win 3-0

I didn't realise Saints were so far ahead of the times by having celeb crowd spotting pics and flying players to games by private aircraft.

I feel a bit sorry for Whitelaw.

More from a tour Down Under. May/June 1959. Hearts had just finished 2nd in the league after lifting the title in 57/58 and would win at again in 59/60. They played 15 games winning 14 and drawing the other scoring 110 goals and conceding 13. This covers 2 games in Adelaide, the first on 6 June at Adelaide Oval where they defeated Australia 6-0, the following day they beat Victoria 7-1 in Melbourne then back in Adelaide 3 days later to defeat South Australia 8-0.

Saints did this quite regularly with Baird – they flew him down for a League Cup game against Motherwell a couple of weeks before, when presumably he was in enough time to hold the pilot's hand and pose for a photo.

(Baird, incidentally, was the uncle of Sally Magnusson).

Excellent. Didn't know this. Any idea why we flew him for games? Did he have a good job outside football or such? Imagine Steve's face if Tommy suggested signing a player we needed to fly to games!

Actually, looking into it, it seems it was a short-term exercise. James Clark, a Saints supporter and hobbyist pilot would fly to Aberdeen to pick Baird up, as he worked as a PE teacher in Aberdeen and only finished school at 4pm.
For the League Cup quarter-final against Motherwell, Clark met Baird at Dyce Airport at 4.15pm and they flew to Scone in a Miles Messenger  to arrive after 5pm. From there they took a taxi to Muirton Park. Kick-off for the evening game was 6pm, so even with favourable weather on the way down it was a close thing.
It went a bit wrong for the midweek game against Arbroath a couple of weeks later, when weather conditions delayed the flight and Baird was very late for the game. Sadly, I think this spelled the end of the air taxi service.

Changed days indeed. Finishing work at 4 in Aberdeen and playing in Perth at 6 isn't exactly needing an overnight stay in a luxury hotel when travelling from Glasgow to Forfar for a game. Many thanks for that.
