Saturday 14 August 1937 Arbroath 0 Dundee 3 in the opening game of the season in front 9,500. Despite the defeat Arbroath finished 11th on 35 pts, the same as Hibs but with an inferior goal average. Dundee made history by being relegated for the first time. They finished on 32 pts, 1 pt behind Kilmarnock, Ayr United, Queen of the South, Clyde, St Mirren and Hamilton Accies and 2 pts behind Queen’s Park. Dundee had a better goal average to all but Hamilton.

Bobby McKean...  With the exception of Kenny Dalglish, he was my absolute hero as a boy.   Even though he left Saints for Rangers, he was my favourite player in Scotland. Then he died. I was 11 years old.  Can still remember the day....

Football special 1926 style. No time for a pint in Forfar before the game as pubs shut at 2.30pm back then. Plenty of time after the game though.

Forfar Athletci - sounds quite exotic.

Wednesday 16 August 1939 and 7,000 at Gayfield for a Dewar Shield Semi Final with the holders Arbroath losing 0-3 to eventual winners Aberdeen. This was the first year Aberdeen wore red instead of black and gold stripes.   https://www.arbroatharchive.co.uk/matchdetails.php?id=4155     https://afcheritage.org/matches/match-report?id=6117

Note the Dons had only played their Aberdeenshire qualifying playoff 2nd leg at Buckie on Monday winning 7-5 (aggregate 12-7 !).

Final was a fortnight later... that's still 2 days before Germany invaded Poland and 4 days before Britain declared war on Germany, but with many preparations well underway... ending Aberdeen 2-2 Falkirk before 12,000; the Bairns missed striker Keyes, who was capped for the Scottish League in their 3-2 win over the Irish League at Windsor Park:

With league football suspended for 6 weekends after the outbreak of hostilities, there was a brief revival of local cup interest, so unusually the replay at Brockville was held on Saturday 30th September, finishing 2-1 to the visitors but still before only 8,000:

Falkirk went on to win SFL East Division but lost title playoff to Rangers.

I know a chap called Raitt. Not the commonest of names- I wonder if it was a relative.

Mr Raitt is an egg chaser unfortunately

When googling Mr Raitt (David), born in Buckhaven, up popped another David Raitt, born in Dundee. The Dundee born lad was not as fortunate as he was wounded in 1915 and then again in 1917 where he lost a leg, an arm and an eye. Fathered another 2 children to add to an earlier 2. Lived in Callander post WW1 and died ages 63 in 1951.:David Raitt the football player moved to Everton in 1922 then Blackburn Rovers in 1928 and Forfar Athletic in 1929.
