Your Clubs World Cup Legends

Recommended Posts

Which players have played at your club and also entertained and dazzled the entire world at the World Cup?

Iliyan Kiryakov, the midfield maestro.  Part of the legendary Bulgarian team of 1994.  Probably spent more time at the casino then Pittodrie during his time with us.

Tsanko Tsvetanov, I don't remember much about him.  I think he was signed to be a pal for Kiryakov.

Rory Fallon, capable of scoring the odd great goal but a vastly over-inflated opinion of his own ability.  Part of the legendary All Whites Invincible of 2010.

It's weird that right back is our weakest position and we've got two going to the World Cup. And Edson Braafheid who was utter shite appeared in the 2010 final, coming on as a sub.

In terms of actual impressive records, Larsson appeared in 94, 98 and 2002 and scored in the 94 3rd place playoff. Less impressively, he missed a penalty when they were knocked out by Germany in the 2006 last 16.

Sauzee would normally be the answer to this sort of question, but France fucked up qualifying (once against us!) twice during his career.

I'll go for Ulises de la Cruz. Wildly inconsistent record signing, but him playing in the 2002 WC for Ecuador conned Villa into paying a few quid for him afterwards.

He's now a member of the Ecuador national assembly (parliament).

Jimmy Davidson, Johnny MacKenzie and David Mathers were all in the 1954 World Cup squad. Mathers stayed at home on reserve.

Our next World Cup representative was Alan Rough who appeared at the 1978 and 1982 finals while a Thistle player.

Quite a few players who did or would go onto play for Thistle. Alan Hansen, Robert Fleck, Mo Johnston and Derek Johnstone.

The closest thing we have this year is Ryan McGowan who might rock up in the Australia squad.

Unlike my opening post the following player was with us while he played at the World Cup, rather then after their World Cup exploits.

Peter Kjaer was an oddity for Aberdeen during this period of time, a competent goalkeeper.  Once he left we'd have to wait until the arrival of Joe Lewis to finally find a worthy replacement.

Sadly he played second fiddle to Thomas Sørensen at the 2002 World Cup.

It's a bit of a cheek as he only ever played one match for Edinburgh City but I'm in before the Rangers, Hibs and Falkirk fans.- Russell Latapy's starring 25 mins for Trinidad and Tobago at the World Cup in Germany..

I think John Blackley is the only player ever to have appeared for Bo'ness - he had a loan spell at the club as a youngster - and in a World Cup. He was part of the team that thrashed Zaire 2-0 in Scotland's first match in '74, but didn't get another run out. Scotland played their remaining games without any ex-BU players and failed to win again. How different history might have been...

The great Paddy Buckley (ex of Bo'ness) would, I believe, have gone to the 1954 World Cup but had to withdraw due to injury.

Jorge "El Pitbull" Claros

He was an early hint of banter years potential. Claros came to Scotland to sign for Rangers (before administration), but they were skint. So he signed on loan for Hibs instead. I thought he was a decent player, but he was in a team managed by Pat Fenlon.

Latapy absolutely cigared that 25 minutes. Should have had more game time IMO.

We also had his compatriot Densill Theobald at the time and he appeared in all 3 group games.

The most Scottish-looking Bulgarian ever! Looks a fisherman's son from some No voting north east, fish town.
