Aim Here
Me, I think Jesus was different from the Christian conception of him. He was an itinerant troublemaking rabbi with ideas above his station, who probably didn't think he was the son of God (only in the Gospel of John - the latest and least authentic gospel - is he quoted as saying that), who tried to lead a political movement to overthrow Roman rule in Judea (Matthew chapter 10 has him more or less explicitly promising to start a civil war!), but he was squished like a bug by the Roman establishment after smashing up the temple and pissing off all the Jewish Leaders That Mattered in first century Jerusalem. It's notable that the charge sheet items against Jesus in the gospel of Luke are all secular political offences (claiming to be a king, and urging Jews to not pay their taxes and overthrow Rome), rather than blasphemies against Judaism. It's after he died that his followers tried to keep his political movement going by claiming he was the son of God, returning from the dead to lead the Jewish people to victory - in a very similar manner to the way that modern far-right Trump followers today reacted to the failure of their movement and Biden's election victory by generating absolutely ludicrous apocalyptic fantasies about election fraud and how JFK Jr will come back from the dead and Trump will have everyone in power in the US arrested. Basically, early Christianity was the QAnon of it's day. Edited May 3, 2022 by Aim Here
